View Full Version : Giving Up On Computer Games Yet?

I've always been fond of playing computer games on...the computer. There's many reasons I preferred games on the computer to console games, I won't waste time listing them all. I did not want to get into consoles for quite a long time, but lately I've had a change of heart.
Console games have replaced computer games as being the best experience for gaming. This is due to a variety of factors. #1: Computer games don't seem to be sold in large quantities at game stores anymore. #2: If it's a big name game, it likely has counterparts on the consoles, so there's less impetus to upgrade your computer every X months to match the trend of new games. #3: Since they now have games available for PC and console, the games themselves take far less advantage of the things you can do with a keyboard than they used to. Look at the differences between System Shock II and Bioshock to see what I mean.
The main reason though is #4: I hate upgrading my PC and having to work through 9000 glitches per game even after said upgrade.
I wonder if most other people are impelled to give up computer games for good. It took a long time to get me into the other side of the camp.

I own 0 computer games. I already gave up on them.
I'm with you, or at least I want to be. I've already pre-ordered and pre-loaded Mass Effect 2 on Steam. I'm not going to buy a 360 just to play it, I have save games from Mass Effect 1 on PC that I'd like to use and it's not coming out on PS3. So I have no choice. My system is barely good enough for it to run but I fully expect to run into many issues. Running Mass Effect 1 on my system was agonizing. It would crash regularly, rarely lasting more than 20 minutes running straight. And I ran into a section that would crash every single time that just so happened to be right before the final sequence of the game. It turned out to be a video card driver issue (because who has a Nvidia card?) and I had to install and test old driver after old driver before I finally found one that would allow me to proceed.
I really hope Mass Effect 3 comes out on PS3. There's no reason for it not to now that EA owns Bioware.

Last game I played on my PC was the Strongbad game. All my gaming is on the consoles now.

the last game i picked up new for a computer was star wars: kotor and it played like ass so i haven't picked up anything else. the only thing i did pick up was the command and conquer game pack with like 10 of their games and expansions, but those games aren't really that tough on any of the hardware.
i really wish i had a decent computer though for when the DC mmorpg comes out, but im not going to buy a new computer for just one game.

I play computer games.
I can ONLY play 1st person shooters like COD on computer, no fucking thumbstick. They SUCK. Nothing replaces the accuracy of a mouse, especially a high DPS lazer mouse.
But Computer games to kinda seem on their way out if you go to Gamestop and similar stores. The entire computer game section is a half bookshelf in the back of the store with garbage on it.

Only computer game I still play is Final Fantasy XI. Will never play another one. Console is king now.
If Microsoft was smart about things they should embrace the PC market, allow keyboard and mouse support on 360, and they solid.

I suppose I technically have to say I mostly use the computer, but that's only because I'm a total WoW addict. Almost every other game I play is on my DS, stuff I can just spend 15-20 minutes on at a time.

I have not bought a computer game in a while. I have Gametap and use that on the computer. If I ever get a new computer I will get a little bit back into computer games but most of my gaming is on the X-Box. So, I haven't technically given up, but I also have not seen anything I have had to have for a long time either.

I play a lot of casual flash games (free) on the computer. I got really sick of having to troubleshoot graphics performance just to find that most games need to run on a very expensive system in order not to have 15 fps and horrible rendering. The way gpu's and cpu's are released is a total fucking scam, on par with how Apple trickles out their technology.
To my complete shock I haven't had any issues with Mass Effect 2 besides crashing once when I first tried to import my ME1 save. I tried it again and it worked fine. And its running great. There's barely any slow down and it looks incredible. It takes forever to load but I expected that. I only have 1 gig of RAM. I am very surprised and elated.

What are your PC specs
according to system requirements lab I wont be able to play Mass Effect 2 even though I really want to!
The only problem I will have is that my video card is apparently not supported although I pass all the individual requirements I really dont want to install a new video card as in the past doing so has lead to many many problems
I might just try and install to see if it works anyway......

I have not bought a PC game in about 10 years, for all the reasons you listed, but especially #4.
And like you said, most PC games are ported to the consoles...the only reason to invest in PC gaming would be the MMOs, which I've never really been interested in.
That said...as I noted in another thread, there is a game coming out next year that could possibly change my entire opinion on this...

Pentium 4 3.2Ghz, 1GB of RAM and an Nvidia 8600GT.
I think the Nvidia board is doing most of the heavy lifting here.

Loving Mass Effect 2 so far with one small annoyance.......The scanning mini game if you can call it that is getting tedious

It's alright at first. Then it gets tedious. Then you start to miss the annoying Mako. Then it makes you want to kill yourself. And then you've gotten through 25% of the game.
Unfortunately it's the only way to afford all the upgrades and find the more obscure missions.

i have almost zero time for computer games but i am playing dragon age (very slowly). for me, deep RPGs don't translate to a console/controller... i also played defense grid - very good desktop defense game

They need to hurry up and get WoW on the PS3 - i would start playing it immediately. I hate to play games on the computer due to the use of the keyboard exclusively.

Only own the Wii and 360 so I still get the stuff I would have baught on the 360 on the PC(Mass Effect 1,2, Dragon Age, Half Liefe, ETC)
Also my PC is a tiny god. (Allthough I will say after this PC I won't upgrade any longer. This PC was it)

Command and Conquer 4 is a piece of shit.
They have totally separated from the previous games and mechanics to make this piece of garbage
Ive found balance issues in skirmish mode that make the game almost unplayable
You need a constant net connection to play even in campaign mode
Stay away from this garbage it pisses on all the previous C and C games

Well, I have the computer but no games. I don't want to play games I already have played on the XBox which is really limiting my options.
