Although these people live a bit extremely in regards to the cold, I can somewhat relate. I live in an old apartment building where the heat comes from an old stove in the kitchen, which pretty much keeps the kitchen warm but not my bedroom nor TV room.

So I leave it off. The windows are insulated and I have a space heater in each room for really cold nights, but it has to be around 0 for me to feel I need them. I don't mind it at all. The rent is cheap (so are the bills) and that's helping me save for a better place, but it's my second winter in the place and it really isn't a big deal at all.

I'm much more comfortable than my friends who live in places where they have no control over the heat and have their windows open during the winter because it's too hot.

Understandable. I'm referring more to the people in the article that do it by choice
