View Full Version : Will There Ever Be Another Shelby Mustang?

The Shelby Mustang was a car that could be purchased used in the 1970s for only a couple thousand and even the roughest example is worth over 100k today.
I have a 2004 Cadillac CTS-V that is getting up there in mileage and is nearing the trade in point. I would definitely trade it in ASAP but something tells me it might be worth something some day. I compare it to a Shelby because it is the racing version of a normal production car. It is nothing crazy like a Ferrari but they are somewhat rare.
I bought it used in 2006 for about 40k and its trade in value is around 8k today. It has 120k miles.
Am I being crazy or is this something I should hold onto?

How does it depreciate 32,000 dollars in 3 years?

That was a trade in value given by Kelley Blue Book, it may be worth more on the open market. The high mileage and fact that a new CTS-V design is on the market are probably the biggest contributors.

sorry dude, but you're kidding yourself...should've spent that cash on a used m3 and you'd probably be able to get more than 8grand for a trade.

That isn't the issue at hand dude. I'm talking 30 years from now.

Sorry dude, I'm not kidding myself. I didn't buy the car, or even know what the hell it was until 20 minutes ago.

You lose a few thousand just driving it off the lot.
Different channels show different auto auctions and I dont think you ever really see anything later than the 70s, unless they're auctioning something for charity. I think once you lose the ability to work on a car at home the idea of it being collectible goes away.
They also dont sell those cars with 100k miles on them, they rebuild them. If you're going to buy a rebuilt modern car it seems like youd just buy a new one.
Maybe something like a corvette, where people are avid collectors. Or maybe if we get off gasoline, or performance cars go away because of emissions standards and the only way you can get something like that anymore is if the car is grandfathered in.

They still are making Shelby Mustangs. They start with a GT and how crazy they go with it is up to you and your checkbook. I'm a CTS owner myself, I absolutely love the car. For yours, considering the mileage and blue book, fuck it, keep it. I bow down to you if you are racing it, are you using drag radials or slicks?

Yeah they have been making the new Shelby Mustang for a few years now. I just used that as an example of a car that was affordable 10 years after it was made, but its value has skyrocketed since then.

Probably not. The odds are against it. But if you enjoy your car, stick it in the garage and use it on sunny days. If it makes you happy who gives a shit. If it ends up being worth more in the future, double win.
BTW, nice car. Only thing that GM makes that is worth a damn.

people here are being kind of dicky. and this may come off the same.
its a luxury car that you bought used. i have a good friend who did the same thing with a '04 7 series. paid 32.000 for it and now can't sell it because no one will pay more than whats its worth which is essentially what he did.
caddys have a good name but honestly you can't compare it to a shelby.
luxury cars are a status symbol, and should not be bought used. i always find that to be a bit of a bad move guys make. its almost like you're trying to be at a level you really arent. (at least that what my friend did)
for instance this car was the shit in 99.

In 1996 the last year Ford was going to make the Bronco I got one. Not only did I buy the Bronco, but I got everything you could on it like the big 5.8, towing package, etc. Other than off road I kept it nice, and up until a year and a half ago I only had 70k on it. I now drive it more frequently since my Ranger became not so street legal and since I currently can not afford a daily driver like I once could.
Low mileage, fully loaded, well maintained I can still only get 10k for it (offered 2 months ago). But, I love this truck and plan to drive it for another 200k.

While its at the top of the American car totem pole, I wouldn't really consider Cadillac a luxury car. The V is the racy version of a pretty standard car (CTS), much like the Shelby, which is why I chose it for the comparison.

I think it is stupid to buy any car brand new and I don't see why a 'luxury' car would be any different. It was $40k, which is about the same price for a decked out SUV or truck--not exactly 'luxury' vehicles. When I bought it, it had 19k miles, and I was the second owner, so it was still very new.
If $40k was the limit I wanted to spend at the time, I could have bought a brand new decked out Suburban that cost $40k but was worth $28k once I drove it off the lot or a used CTS-V that had already gone through its initial depreciation and was still worth what I paid, even after I got it off the lot.

Again, I'm not talking about a 10 year time period, I'm talking about putting it in the barn for 30 years until it becomes a 'classic.' The Shelbys were like $4-5k in the 1970s because they were out of style, now they are worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. I guess my question is will there be another 'classic car' resurgence 30 years from now like the one we are experiencing now? And, if so, would the V be a good candidate to be one of those sought after cars?
