I want to use a usb port to charge a device but not have the PC detect the device, load drivers, etc.
Anyone?

My Dell XPS 16 supposedly charges through the usb when the laptop is shut off, but I have yet to get it to work.

Both Windows and Mac will see the device and try to load drivers, usually.

usually.
I usually jerk off every night. I was hoping to find a bit more definite of an answer.

What's wrong with having it load the drivers? If you're quick, I suppose you could just try to cancel the driver install.

Yup, can always cancel the process after its detected the new hardware but (and yes this is trivial) I don't like the extra beeping and mouse clicks. Would rather have a usb port on each of my note/netbooks that I could use to just charge stuff. I know I could crack the case and physically disconnect pins 2&3 but thats a touch extreme. Was hoping to do this via software.

Just let the drivers load.
It is the will of Landru.

try disabling the plug and play service, which is what kicks off the action. the only thing is, if you disable it, I am not sure if it will still get a charge. it is a quick test.
go to start - run
type services.msc
go to plug and play and disable.
test it, if it does not work, re-enable it.
Works great. I charge my PS3 controller that way sometimes

your usb didlo.
Silly goose, a USB "didlo" wouldn't provide nearly enough power.

Interesting and would have some applications but not what I'm looking for.

you also could put a bit of electrical tape over the 2 center pins on the usb plug. 1 & 4 are for power, 2 & 3 are for data.

[SIZE="2"]electrical tape
Hadn't thought about the electrical tape route. Given the tight specs of the connection not sure if it would stay in place but easy enough to try. If that didn't work what probably would (at least for a while) is clear nail polish.

I have USB power adapters coming out my ass (no dildo comments biggestmexi), that's not the problem. I just HATE carrying extra power supplies when travelling. With the new security measures in place its gone from an annoyance to full fledged piss off to travel with any technology.
Thanks for that stores link though. Their shipping to charges to Canada are actually quite reasonable. There are a lot of ebay sellers who just rape customers when shipping out of the US.

I am not really technical, but this seems pretty easy if you are handy:

Ya, I really want to be going through airport security and explaining to Shaniqua the TSA agent or Bupinder the CATSA agent why I have a bunch of self-soldered wires in my carry-on baggage.

Once you put the shrink tubing on, they won't know the difference. Most are too stupid and have no clue what a USB cable does.

This is true.....however I've had issues with these wizards in the past.
Around six years ago I was working for a company which engineered/manufactured enterprise VoIP equipment and I traveled with a briefcase of demo gear including a small router, bunch of adapters and a telephone handset. Flying out of Indianapolis (which is one of the bigger shitholes I've had the pleasure in visiting) I got into a heated argument with a cunty TSA employee (it pains me to call them an "agent" as that applies some sort of legitimate skill or authority) who considered the handset a "striking weapon".

i forgot the a/c adapter for my mp3 player today, and i'm doing this right now. working like a charm. usb cable's plugged into my pc and is charging fine without trying to sync or mount as a drive. thanks for the tip, Devo37. you're the best!!!
