"Trees" found on Mars?

Per NASA, this is an optical illusion caused by shifting sands and carbon dioxide.
I cant really see how that can happen, but whatever..

Maybe one of you guys can explain it better.

The "trees" are really trails of debris caused by landslides as ice melts in Mars's spring. You can even see a cloud of dust, just to the left of centre of the picture, where an avalanche is caught happening.
The photograph was taken from orbit around Mars by HiRISE, the most powerful camera sent to another planet.

I have sen many optical illusions in my life, but never seen anything that I cant figure out, except this. These "trees" seem to rise above the surface. It does not seem to be streaks on the sand to me. Seriously, try and explain this.

They seem to be saying that the dark tree like structures are actually streaks of darker material that is being forced through the sand. What I cannot figure out is why it seems that these streaks form in a line, and the only explanation I can think of is that it is as if the sand cracked and the darker material oozed out through the crack, and because we are looking at a satellite image, we are seeing this hillside from an unnatural angle to us. This unnatural angle gives our eyes and brains the illusion that the streaks are pointing upward, but they are really pointing down. This is the only logical explanation I can conceive of tha might account for this illusion. If I am wrong, explain it to me and show me how it should be interpreted. Its really nagging me!
