Straight people are trying to get out of marriages and gays want to get into them. Let them have their marriages if they want but the only people who are going to benefit are lawyers. Put it on the ballot with the provision that no matter who wins it can't be voted on again for 10 years.

Must be the Radon. Get the fuck out of New Jersey and move to Vermont. Free homosexual marriages and all the Ben & Jerry's you can eat.

I almost got in a fight with my parents discussing this. They're surprisingly unsympathetic to the plight of homosexuals. I guess all that religious brainwashing is working.
I fucking HATE people who mind other people's business. Just let them marry, I don't care what the religious asswipes say, it's not a religious ceremony. It's a business arrangement. Don't let them "marry" in your church if you don't like it, but let them marry in the eyes of the law, the law shouldn't be effected by anyone's religion.

Funny thing about my parents is, they got an official ceremony by the mayor because my mother's church wouldn't marry them since my father is Muslim. Yea, your fucking religions really did a lot for you, keep standing by them.
Ridiculous. If they found some happiness, let them enjoy it. It's all fleeting, even life itself.

Preface: I am 100% for gay marriage
BUT
this was the right thing to do because the people of NJ in an election voted against gay marriage. this was then proposed, and then senators (who represent the people) once again upheld what the people of the state wanted.
perfect world scenario i know, and it never really works like this. but this is the reason the senate was put in place, to make sure no one person could make a decision the whole state did not want.
edit: i might be talking out of my ass here, maybe NJ did not put it to a vote and it was NY? i don't remember exactly now. but the november election i thought NJ voted it down.

Gay marriage and medical marijuana are going to eventually be in all the states. Deal with it. If you don't like it move to some ass backwards middle eastern country.

I hope you're right, but I think you greatly underestimate people's ignorance, prejudice and the brainwashing religion put on them.

I don't believe that NJ had a vote but with the California vote even though the voters said no some group is bringing it to the courts saying that you can't vote on something that goes against a person's rights (e.g. voting to not allow a certain group to do something). Of course, it still remains to be seen if gay marriage is considered a "right". For the record, I do consider it a right.

the law shouldn't be effected by anyone's religion.
Although I completely agree with this, our entire legal system is rooted in religious beliefs.
Its funny, our government has checks and balances for the three branches, but none for religion, which runs rampant through all of them.

You mean that certain religious values are part of the laws, etc. essentially the goverrnments involved have adopted the same goals, etc. of certain religions.
No religion is running rampant through the government. No religious organization can pass state or federal laws, enforce such laws, or adjudicate when such laws have been broken on behalf of the goverment. If they did, abortion wouldn't be legal, you'd have prayer in schools and a host of other things.
And to say there is no checks or balances patently ignores the First Amendment which forbids Congress respecting an establishment of religion. As stated more informally, this portion is designed to separate church and state.
Given the various uproars from the religious right, it's clear that while not perfect this separation has occurred more often than not. Religious intrusion on the goverment is checked often.

I'd replace certain with many but yes.

Wasn't abortion illegal at one point? Didn't we used to have prayer in school? Can't that all be reversed? I think that has to do more with what majority sits on the supreme court

Oh sure, its not preachers and ministers voting on these laws and saying its for god. Its just god fearing, highly relious senators and representatives saying its "for the people".

This goes with what I said above. Those protestors are there to say "hey remeber us? Better vote for god, or we'll bury you". Now I'm not saying it works all the time, just enough where we don't see it as a problem.

But that means that it's not religion controlling the government, but people's beliefs, which may be religious or not. It doesn't mean that the religion itself controls the government.
In the end, a government will always be affected to by the beliefs of the people in it. To say that, religion controls the government is a different thing.
Oh sure, its not preachers and ministers voting on these laws and saying its for god. Its just god fearing, highly relious senators and representatives saying its "for the people".
See above. That will always be the case. The only way around would be to forbid religious people from running for goverment, but that would be a violation of the First Amendment as well.

Which means that religion is checked within the government.
