how can I make an animated gif out of a quicktime vid (.MOV)?

It will need cropping and looping.

I'm fairly tech savvy, but I don't know where to start.

Probably your best bet is image capture software (SnagIt, CaptureEze, etc.) that capture video. That's what I have used:

E.M. Total Video Converter. Could do it. You might be able to get a trial of it first. Or if I could get the same type of file.I will test it out for you.
