The world is my toilet, my bottles get thrown out and end up in the landfill forever.

Ummm.....sure
More than anything else can't be bothered to collect them and make the trip to the bottle depot. Our municipality rolled out curb side recycling this year so actually very few of my bottles now make it to the trash.

My extensive Canadian beer store experience reflects that it makes financial sense to return beer bottles, and they go on the inbound conveyor belt, while the fresh beer comes on the outbound conveyor belt. I haven't been there in a few years though.

From what I know about my eastern kin that's got to be an Ontario thing.
Alberta (where I call home) all our liquor stores are privately run and can't think of any that still have an integrated bottle return. I have vague memories while I was a little guy of us having beer stores that operated as you described but even when they were government run I think they did away with that a long time ago.
Funny since I was looking at wikipedia's entry for state liquor laws this afternoon.
