I'm having some problems with my external hard drive and I think I need a good program that will check all the sectors and do repairs. Does anyone have any suggestions on any that work with external hard disk drives and on systems with Windows 7?

I used to be a big fan of Symantec/Norton Disk Doctor. I would check that out.

Auslogics disk dfrag, a lot better than Window's built in one.

Then clean up with CCleaner and use it's registry cleaning tool without fear.

And Magicure has a 15 day free trial, give that a shot.

and that right there is why I spend exactly twice as much on external hard drive space as I want to.

Between 7 drives I have 1.65 terabytes and it is all hot swapable so in case of emergency I can run with my data. Just most do not want to pay $3k for a computer so an external is a good idea.

Speaking of hard drive repairs, is there a free "last ditch" program to try to get a drive to work? I have two drives that stopped working. One is a desktop drive, and the other is a laptop drive. I've tried multiple times to read the data on them, using an external USB enclosure (after several attempts at using them as internal boot drives, and internal slave drives). Both of them begin to be recognized, but eventually stop spinning.

I'm 99% sure both drives are just dead, and I'm about to throw them away. I don't like to give up, though. Any ideas?

Unlikely without spending a ton of money for someone to remove the platters from the bad drive, put thm into a good drive, and copy all the info. Or a drive cloning machine that likely would not wok if you have a burnt hd motor or bad read/write heads.
