I've been emailed lately asking about RF.Net's stance on modding, so I wanted to just put this out in a separate post so it is easy to find, even though it has been said before.
You bought the machine, you own the machine, you should be able to do whatever you want to it. I subscribe to the Maker's Credo, and believe that you haven't begun to play with hardware until you void the warranty.
You can mod your gaming machine, you can give directions, you can link to directions, you can post pictures, you can talk about all the wonderful software running on your machine and how it streams audio, video and Jesus to your tv thru it. The ONLY limitation is posting copyrighted software on RonFez.Net or linking directly to it.
To put it simply, you can link to NESticle NES emulator, you can post directions on how to download and install and how to run ROMs, but you cannot link directly to the ROMs.
I hope this clears it up, and if you do modify your XBox, Playstation or Nintendo machines, post it up on RF.Net and let us know what you've done. Maybe you'll inspire others to do the same.

I find this hard to believe.

I have yet to mod my Xbox or my PS3 because I am afraid of being banned.

I've got my Wii modded to the max! I also have a bootchipped slim PS2, but that's old and nobody cares.
Also - I used to be really into modding actual video games (which is what I thought this topic was about). The N64 has a pretty big modding community for emulated games where you can actually substitute the textures in the game for hi-res or custom images that you have on your computer. So if you don't like Mario's face, you can put your own over his.

yea nobody really cares about what you do with the machine you bought. They are against modding because of the games it would allow you to play that you DIDNT buy.

There's a lot more you can do actually.
With wii you can connect an external hard drive to your Wii, and install your games so you never need the disc again.
There's also a ton of homebrew applications you can use, there's a Google Earth type program, and a bunch of other legal free games.
It also enables the wii to play video files, and dvds which it doesn't do out of the box.

I modded my 1st gen Xbox last year, after the HD died, and run XBMC on it. To me it has extended its usefulness. I can stream movies to it from my PC and watch on TV by just sharing the video folder on my pc.. There are programs to do this on XB360, but i find them to be resource hogs and not very reliable..
N64, PS1, NES, SNES and MAME emulators.. Also plays burned games. I only use my xblive account on my 360, so no fear of having it banned.
I will probably mod my XB360 once the next generation console comes out.

right, so that one person can buy it, or people can split it, and save the disc to 100 different Wii's, allowing them to play games they didnt buy

Well, that's up to the person. There's a lot of bullshit arguments for modding that you know are just covering up for playing pirated games, but this is a legitimate one. A large targeted demographic for the Wii is younger children, so keeping discs out of their hands is a huge benefit.
You don't blame the gun manufacturer for producing weapons once someone uses it to shoot another person.

i agree, but the people who wanna fuck up the games is why they are so against modding. If people were honest and didnt pirate games, they wouldnt give a fuck

True, but if the technology is possible, why not just include it with the console, or put out a legitimate add-on that allows it, and fight piracy from there.
Microsoft should have learned this was something people wanted from their last generation console, but didn't include it in the 360. Just this half assed one where you still need the disc. I'm sure people wouldn't mind needing an Xbox live account to verify that they owned the game in order to install discs.
Maybe people would be a little more loyal to the manufacturers if they weren't constantly fucking people over to begin with. When a game is first released, why should a great game cost the same exact amount as some piece of shit game?

i cant argue, esp since they charge 300 bucks for pieces of shit that break 90% of the time. Fuck them

You have to admit, even if there was no such thing as video game piracy, a jukebox for your games is cool shit.
