Didn't NY just pass a law that puts the five cent deposit on water bottles now? That shoud at least help get more of them recycled but I agree that buying bottled water is silly. People bitch about $3.00 a gallon gas but pay $10 a gallon for something they can get for free.

More than 20 percent of the nation’s water treatment systems have violated key provisions of the Safe Drinking Water Act over the last five years, according to a New York Times analysis of federal data.

I worked for Culligan for a couple years. The amount of water we wasted to recharge these archaic tanks that people still use to soften their water was insane. And the number of 5 gallon bottles that I dropped and busted, then threw in the trash, made my soul hurt.
Also, the amount of water wasted in the up-to-date softening process is pretty sick.
Plus the discharge is toxic. But soft water is pretty sweet.
I have a water cooler that holds a 5 gallon jug and I use it for coffee and tea.
The main reason is that the local water has flouride in it and I don't want it dulling my senses. (God I miss Uninformed.)
But, I never buy bottled water from a gas station unless I am out working and the cooler is empty. So I guess I really don't have anything to say about the thread topic. Too bad you read all this, huh?

It really is mindboggling that there is a market for water shipped halfway around the world. That means that there are tanker ships loaded with water running that swill over here. Why?

I don't think is directed at guys like you, my friend. With your job and lifestyle it makes sense to have bottled water handy all the time. This is directed more at people who stock up on bottle water to drink at home or at work when they have easy access to a tap or other water sources.

I remember when NYC used to have the best water in taste tests. Now, its not even on the list.
I never tried this with bottled water, but I used to put tap water in a teflon pan and boil it down until the water was gone, and see all the solids left behind. It was chalky white powder, probably calcium or whatever.

Why not get an inline filter for your sink instead of a brita that you need to refil every day?
We have this one:
http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1vZ1xr5/R-100471282/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053
Using this filter:
http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1vZ1xr5/R-100068423/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053
Filter lasts 6 months. They have more intense ones if you are really worried about your water. Much more convenient that having to go the Brita jug way. Just mount it someplace under the sink.
On our water line going to the freezer's ice maker we have another filter which lasts us a year.

For apartment-dwellers, you can also consider faucet-mount tap-filters. Brita makes one and so does Pur; installation is so simple, a child could do it.
Filter lasts about 3-6 months, depending on how often you use it. The only downside is it changes the flow from the regular faucet stream to a more condensed flow, so it's great for refilling bottles, but not so great for teakettles or stockpots.
(And, yeah, I know. I'm validating something Jezo posted instead of contradicting it. I can't believe it either.)

At home I drink filtered water out of the fridge, but if I'm out, I'll buy bottled water (smart water or Fiji). I also reuse the bottles to make iced tea in with the fridge water at home (you can put the cap on and shake to mix).
