View Full Version : Does Hitchcock stink?

I'm curious....
I've seen a few Hitchcock films (North by Northwest, Rear Window) Personally I didn't think they were bad films. I thought North by Northwest was at the very least an entertaining film. Rear Window I definetly feels would still hold up (maybe if a few circumstances were different) the essential Idea can still be the same.
Based on those opinions I think the guy isn't too bad. But then again I'm not too sure after listening to O&A this morning.
What do you think? Does Hitchcock stink?

What? Who says Hitchcock stinks? he might not be a director you enjoy but it is just ignorant to say he stinks.

If so, this confirms they have no freaking taste.

I agree. I can't think of more of a litimus test for if I should ever listen to someone's opinion than if they think Hitchcock stinks.

No he doesn't stink. At all.
And yes this holds up, it's been re-worked tons of times in our day, most recently "Disturbia" which I enjoyed.

Hitchcock's movies seem a little stiff and wooden but that's because every scene was meticulously planned out before shooting. It's a matter of taste, of course.
Does anyone have audio of this discussion?

I'd love to hear the audio. Saying Hitchcock stinks is just such a dumb thing to say. I understand not liking Hitchcock movies but saying he stinks means you think he is talentless and makes shit movies. Who knows, maybe whoever said it has a well-thought out argument for why Hitchcock is a failure who didn't achieve anything he set out to do by making his movies.

I would bet that if you did a general survey of 5 people who are the top film directors of all time, Hitchcock would be high on that list. His movies appealed to virtually everyone, from the masses to the more elitists.

I think the man was incredible and heres why. As a kid I wasnt real big on watching old movies. If it was an old movie or black and white especially Id usually just turn it off.
There were exceptions, Abbot & Costello, 3 Stooges, Marx Brothers, Its a Wonderful Life, but it seemed like EVERY Hitchcok movie I saw, I just couldnt take my eyes off it. I wouldnt even know they were Hitchcock movies until afterwards. North by Northwest and the Birds just blew me away. I mean at 12 years old for a guy to keep me glued to the set like that showed me just how much a master of suspense he was.
Same with his tv show. I LOVED watching that on Nick at Nite.

I am just finishing a special topics English course that focuses on Hitchcock films. We started with The Lodger and finished with The Birds.
There is so much shit in Hitchcock films your head could spin trying to find it all within each movie. from his Persephone myths (everything floral with the female characters), birds, doubling, framing his characters within frames/
The depth and undertones of his films are so rich and complex it's really amazing.

I'm not going to O&A for their artistic appreciation. I heard green day and STP rejoiners today, 'nuff said.
I can understand someone today not appreciating Hitchcock films, as they tend to feel dated, which to me is fine; I've got no problems with art that reflects the times in which it was made. One thing that is for sure is that Hitchcock films have an extremely unique style to them, which you can pick up in many modern movies, such as The Usual Suspects.

That reasoning may work for a 18 or 25 year old, but O&A are in their 40's. The Hitchcock movies or TV shows would have not been that old to them when growing up.

ha, yep, I have already been there and I voted for Dave.
Thanks for making me nervous about the class I have to teach next semester (25 freshman watching 14 weeks of Hitchcock). If they thinks his movies stink I'm in big trouble.
If I may suggest an order for new viewers.
Psycho, Vertigo, Birds, Shadow of a Doubt, North By Northwest, Marnie, Frenzy, Notorious, Rear Window, To Catch a Thief, Trouble with Harry, Strangers on a Train, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Foreign Correspondent, Wrong Man, Rebecca, Man Who Knew Too Much.
About half of Hitchcock's movies are truly classics and the rest are entertaining. But he made movies for his audiences without talking down to them and for that I'm glad.

North by Northwest was his multi-dimensional remake of 39 Steps, Thornhill is a descendant of Hannay.
You have to consider that he was also loaned actors by the studios that he didn't necessarily want sometimes. He never wanted Novak for Vertigo and aside from Robert Walker, i think SOAT was a casting annoyance for him but it still came out to be remarkable-which is a testament to his craft and level of commitment to his work.

My personal favorite is To Catch A Thief. It's not great cinema like some of his other works, but Iove Cary Grant and Grace Kelly in that flick.
I remember watching it on WOR during a Cary Grant marathon on New Years Day or New Years Eve, shortly after Cary Grant passed away. I remember being home by myself cooking burgers and fries for myself and just having quality time by myself, which was hard to do in a family of 6 at that time.

Hitchcock almost always hated his casting...no greater example than Foreign Correspondent.
If you want a great read, try "Truffaut on Hitchcock (http://www.amazon.com/Hitchcock-Revised-Helen-G-Scott/dp/0671604295/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1260635892&sr=8-1#noop)". Its an amazing insight into Hitchcock and his films.

Cary Grant is amazing in pretty much everything. PBS ran a short documentary on him this Thanksgiving so i listened and watched in between cooking.
I personally don't like Kelly, i haven't seen her in much but what she does seems less like acting and more like just being who she normally was on film.

Those who say that Hitchcock stinks I want to know your top 5 favorite films of all time.
Hitchcock is a genius. While I didn't think Vertigo was as great as everyone says.... making movies such as Psycho, Rope, North by Northwest, The Birds, Frenzy, and Rear Window should guarantee that no one ever says "you stink" no matter how many bad movies you make before or after.

The books for class were actually "A Hitchcock Reader" and that one, my only complaint is that Truffaut is so ass-kissing about everything.
He had to work with who he was given but he did really like a lot of his actors. I mean he uses Grant as an extension of himself (who he wanted to be) and Stewart in roles that were basically carbons of Hitchcock himself. Maybe it would be more accurate to say that he was more fond of the character actors he used?
Watch Strangers on a Train, Shadow of a Doubt and Notorious. After that, if you can claim that Hitchcock "stinks" then I can openly mock you for being fully retarded.
Indeed. And the fact that Robert Walker wasn't even nominated for an Oscar is a fucking crime. He was absolutely brilliant as Bruno Anthony in Strangers on a Train.

Robert Walker is such an awesome creep in that film:

I liked his tv stuff. His movies not so much though.
Cary Grant is amazing in pretty much everything. PBS ran a short documentary on him this Thanksgiving so i listened and watched in between cooking.
.
I half watched it early Thanksgiving but DVR'd it and watched that later.
I had forgotten how many enjoyable films he was in.

I was just going to ask about whether anyone actually said Hitchcock stinks. I always thought that at least a couple of the others would call whoever said it a retard. I didn't think Opie or Jimmy would say Hitchcock stinks but I could imagine Ant saying it in that "fuck liberal, college douchebags" way he talks about race and politics. So, it confirms it, Patrice is a retard when it comes to movies.

One of my all time favorite movies, with North by Northwest close behind.

I have always loved Strangers on a Train. Patricia Highsmith has twisted stories and Hitchcock directing a movie based on her novel is a perfect matchup.
