Virgil's tonight for dinner, anyone in?

Should be there around 630 or 7.

What should I order?

Is this place actually any good?

I was just there last night, and I'll tell you I thought it was JUST OK. The food's not bad - I think Blue Smoke down in Grammercy is better for BBQ. The ribs we pretty good, the brisket was better. I'm not a huge fan of smoked ribs though, especially when you have to sauce them out of bottles on the table. I'm
more of a spare rib/sweeter sticky sauce fan, and Virgils is dry rub vinegar based sauce.

It's not cheap, but it's right in Times Square, so that's just how it's going to be. If you're going out for a night
in the city to check everything out, you'll be fine at Virgils. I wouldn't talk you out of it. Have a good time.

Not really going for a night out, I'll be in to buy something for my chick and figured I'd swing by Virgil's since people keep talking about it on the show.

Reservations made (figured why not?) for 7:30 tonight. Everyone is invited.

Ron let me down.

Normally his recommendation for things are quite spot on, at least in a way I can understand how others appreciate them.

Virgil's main BBQ course was not very good. The ribs did have a dry rub but almost devoid of flavor and the brisket was terrible. The chicken appetizer was decent, a tad over smoked, train wreck fries were good but it felt like something I could have at a multitude of other places.

Man, I told you. Didn't I?

What do you think it means when someone says it's JUST OK in all caps?

That's a nice way of saying it's not so good. I even told you Blue Smoke was better.

I'll have to check out Hill Country, though. I always take a bartender's recommendation. There's also a BBQ place on Park Ave South and like 23rd/24th on the east side of the street that I've had that was pretty good.

Maybe NY just isn't the place to get BBQ, kind of like you wouldn't order sushi in Cleveland.

Yeah.. you did. I was thinking about your post as I was (trying) to eat the ribs. After what you said I was seriously considering switching up to Blue Smoke (parent's just went a few weeks ago, they liked it) but I figured I had to try Virgil's since it has been brought up on the show so many times. Did Ron say he liked it or just that he had been there? Fez's opinion I don't trust at all.

That one is on my list too but I think that after this experience I am going to go back to Dinosaur just to get my BBQ meter back on track. I thought their food was excellent.

im pretty sure he just said that it was ok-- not as bad as he expected for times square. there are not a lot of places for great bbq in new york, the best you can do is find someplace thats not as bad as the others if you're really in the mood for bbq and not in the mood for a roadtrip. when you're already in the times square area and need a place to stop and eat, and you're looking for some basic american stuff, its not a bad choice, but its definitely not a destination.
