On a public beach

Is it legal to bring home a bucket of sand from the beach?

If so, how many buckets is the limit?

Also, is it legal to bring home seashells, driftwood, or beach glass?

You actually think the cops would have a problem with you taking glass?

I've never been to a beach that didn't let you take anything. Though I've never even thought about taking any more sand than what's in my shorts.

I doubt it's legal to take that much. Especially since the city pays to put it there after a bad storm.

in breezy pt, ny the beach builds up about 30 feet every 2 years. after 50 years the sidewalk to the beach path has been extended numerous times. every 300 feet is a bench area which used to be the beach. there are several bench areas

i dont think anyone would miss the sand

but there are a lot of seashells and people have said that they "make" the beach (its nice)

id probably wind up taking a bunch of shells while grabbing the sand

but shells belong to whoever takes them home, right?

a bucket: legal
2 buckets max

seashells: legal
driftwood must be placed on your rock lawn along with a sign that states the surname of your family or will be returned to the ocean
beachglass must be recycled.

Sounds like you are at one of the beaches that actually gains sand every year instead of losing it.

My advice would be, go at like 4am, load up a drum and leave. Do that 4 different nights. Dont worry about the seashells, theyll be millions more.

Screw the 4 a.m. trip, you'd look guilty. Park your truck, put out a couple orange traffic cone and put on one of those reflective vest road contruction people wear. Then shovel away. If you get any questions, make up a story about sampling sand quality of the EPA or some grad school research bullshit.

I'm going to the beach with my girlfriend who wants to take sand from the beach? Is that allowed? Is there an ordinance against it? I tried to tell her I would go to home depot or lowes to buy sand but she says why pay for sand when you can get it free at the beach. So can you take sand from the beach? She has a bucket ready to go for tomorrow.

KingGeno

It is illegal along the coasts in some areas. It seems to have gotten more illegal in areas. I would go to the website of the beach you are going to, and find out. You may wanna give them a call and find out. There are a lot of places that allow it, but some beaches that are private and/or public do have ordinances against it, due to beach erosion.

we take sand from our campground beach every summer to fill up our sand box at home. We fill up 4 5gallon pails every couple of weeks and tote it back home. It's probably stealing, but hey...we pay to stay there all summer.

The real question should be: Is it illegal to drive a fork lift on the beach?

How do you propose moving a 55 gallon drom of sand while on the sand? Whatever you will use will sink into the sand and make movement nearly impossible. Why not rent a dump truck and get some day laborers and shovels and drive to a desserted beach at night and have the wetbacks shovel the truck full and then drive away with it?

Suspect Chin

I found an estimated density for dry sand to be 1780 kg/m^3

1 m^3 = 264 gal
1 kg = 2.2 lbs.

Therefore:

(1780 kg/m^3) x (1 m^3/264 gal) x (2.2 lb/1 kg) = 14.8 lb/gal

For a 55 gallon drum:

(14.8 lb/gal) x (55 gal) = 815.8 lbs. plus the weight of the barrel

The Locals usually frown on taking a shitload of sand from the beach. We had a bunch of mexicans who backed up a truck, opened the back and started shovelling away. we didn't have a problem with it..but some busybody called the cops and said that they were defacing the natural beauty of the beach and abusing a natural resource. Seashells..meh take em same as driftwood we always just threw it out anyway. But the hypodermics that wash... up we encourage visitors to take home.
