HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- Hofstra University is dropping its football team, citing high costs and low interest from the college community.
In a statement obtained by The Associated Press on Thursday, university president Stuart Rabinowitz says "the choice was painful but clear."
He says factors include the cost of running the football program and the team's inability to generate significant interest, financial support or attendance.
The decision follows a two-year review of sports spending at Hofstra. Rabinowitz says there are no plans to cut any other sports at the Long Island school.

I guess with the Jets no longer footing the bill for the stadium they decided to get rid of it. Will they demolish the stadium now? That would be a shame since the Conference games are held there. I have fond memories of cheering on that field.

This also means Hofstra can drop up to 80 womans athletics scholarships that are required by Title IX. Should be interesting.

The only thing I know about Hofstra comes from an old Bill Cosby bit I heard off one of his old comedy albums, telling his story about having to play those guys.
I'm assuming he was playing for Temple then?
Funny shit if you can find it, and sounds like Hofstra football used to be on the national scene then.

wait what? the jets foot the bill for what stadium?
the jets had their practice bubble on campus & it was used but a lot of the other teams aside from football for practice. (except for lacrosse cause they almost popped it once)
no one at hofstra gave a shit about football. i was an athletic training major & didn't even give a crap. this was long over due. i really don't see anyone caring much & i don't know why everyone is acting so surprised.
if they do have to cut female scholarships because of this i just hope they'd find another way to work it out.

Can't. Title IX says everything's got to be equal. Happens all the time to wrestling and swimming programs.

Hearing about Hofstra always makes me think of that time they beat George Mason twice in the same week (including in the A10 tournament), and had a better record, but Mason still went to the tourney for some reason over them, and became everyone's darlings by making the Final Four.

actually has a bar restaurant right there next to the school in east meadow called Chrebets. I never went there but did when it was a dive bar.
