Got my son involved at the end of last year. When they were looking for a leader for the incoming group, most of the paretnts were mothers, so I stepped up. Man, is this a lot of work!
Anyone else involved in Cub Scouts?

our son just started this year. We take turns going to the meetings and stuff. Luckily there were a couple of guys that volunteered to be the den leader. I think boys need a guy leader for this sort of thing.
our pack and den is very disorganized. we never know what's going on. the meetings are a blur of nonsense. I wish they had more organized people in charge.

It does look like a lot of work. My wife almost nominated me for Den leader.

I am sure Hottub will chime in he is heavily involved with the Scouts
I grew up in Scouts. My son has chosen soccer which is expensive and time consuming enough.
I do keep a copy of the Boy Scout Handbook for reference, and I guarantee you that if "the shit goes down" That book will be among the possesions I grab for along with a rope, guns, money and gas.

I'm an eagle scout, went through the whole system.
It is definetly one of the most rewarding things I have done in my life.

Didn't know that about you...
Hats off to you. Definately something to be proud of.

Younger son is a Cub. Mom is the leader.
Older son is now a second class scout. I have a support role with the troop, but no official capacity. I accompany both levels for various outings, fundraises, camping trips, etc. Our pack and troop are probabbly one of the most integrated you will find. Normally they are pretty much kept separate. Our philosophy is that the younger boys can learn from the older scouts experience, and the older boys learn leadership and teaching skills.

Looked what happened to Ronnie B's den mother.
That's what the organization will do to you.

I also have a couple of the boys on my son's hockey team, which I help coach. That is kind of nice, as it cuts down on the creepy cub scout guy image- having the boys and parents interact with me in a wholly different capacity.

My son joined this year. 4th grade, so straight in to Webelos. He really seems to enjoy himself.
There is no way I could be a leader though. Not many parents would like to walk in only to see their kid duct taped to the wall because "he would not settle down".

I was a blue bird. No pocket knife, but I got to sleep with girls.

Eagle Scout here. I went through the whole thing, too. It got tough around 13-14 when I discovered girls and pot. But I am very glad I went thru it. I learned a lot about the outdoors and leadership.

Me too. Good experience and really turned me on to the outdoors, but its not for everybody. My son started scouts but hated it and quit after 6 mos.

They tried to make me sell some tickets to some absurd event. I quit.

he plays on the u14 Traveling Select Classic 3. which translates to about 1k per season in hard cash and for the self employed like myself... probably about 3k in lost wages in season. Is that expensive enough for you? The traveling team is a huge commitment and we have been on it for 14 seasons. I love to watch my son play but it costs me.
