Oddly, people from Europe are continually perplexed how we have two words for fingers and toes. They think of both appendages as "fingers".
I cannot imagine how that started.
But you know that shoe called Five Fingers? It was called that because the company initially tried to patent the idea for that shoe in Italy and there was no word for "toe", so they used "finger".
When Europeans need to refer to their toes, they are literally saying "the fingers on my feet".
