Ive been having a debate with epo about this in the NFL thread and Im interested to see what everyone elses thoughts are on this.

Would you rather the NFL:

A. Stayed with tradition and continued to put the Dallas Cowboys and Detroit Lions on nationally televised games every Thanksgiving?

Or....

B. Schedule the games the way they do Sunday Night Games, with matchups they feel will be huge compelling games, usually between 2 teams expected to be very good that year.

whatever epo says is wrong. so i'm voting for that other one.

definitely quality. the lions have sucked for so long. the cowboys are almost always competitive so i don't mind that they are on every year but why in the HELL would they schedule oakland for the thanksgiving game?

i'll tell you why. because the league loves them and gave them a home game the sunday before thanksgiving plus a cupcake in their short week. conspiracy i tell ya!

but im with aggie, fuck detroit,no one cares about the lions

but if they're going to show the lions they should have to play an AFC EAST team and the cowboys should have to play an AFC WEST team every year to keep the whole country interested

I'd love for there to be better games, but I don't want them to be TOO good.

Most of the time during Thanksgiving, while the game is on, your attention is divided elsewhere between talking and eating and such. I wouldn't want to half-miss something like Pats-Colts, but there's gotta be something better than the Lions or Raiders.

How about having the Lions play the Cowboys in one game, and then two new teams in the other?

I want to make out with tradition, not fuck it

but the Lions are terrible, they need to earn this spot... not just be given the game

give the AFC 1 Team, I say the Steelers

I'm still upset cincy doesn't start off the MLB season anymore.

Dallas playing on Thanksgiving always made sense to me because of the whole "America's Team" thing... But I never got why the Lions always had the other game. They're not even as storied as teams like the Steelers or Packers or 49ers.

But I agree you wouldn't want a game like Colts/Pats or another big match up because most people really only half pay attention to the games anyway unless they're actual fans. People are too busy with their families.

After todays games I feel even more strongly about my choice.

Amen. It's a travesty.

The Reds should start the MLB season and the Tigers should start the AL season.

No ands, ifs, or buts.

And the Lions have been playing on Thanksgiving for 70 years.

Give the people of Detroit SOMETHING.

I agree 100%. Leave it alone, Detroit started it all, they should keep it.

Fuck Detroit. My entertainment is what I care about. I have no reason to give a fuck about that shithole.

If you really want to talk about "Tradition Vs. Quality" we should all admit once and for all that it's embarrassing and asinine to have a team named the "Redskins" in this day and age.

Tradition be damned.

It's childish, offensive, racist, and foolish.

If there was a team called "The Niggers" or "The Kikes" would everyone cry "But they've had the name for so long!"?

Depends on where the team played.

Depends on where the team played.

So maybe we should rename all of the NFL teams.

Henceforth, the 49ers shall be known as the San Francisco Faggots.

The Texans are now the Houston Wetbacks.

The Seahawks will change their name to the Seattle Gooks.

Any more?

That wouldn't work.

A team needs to be named something that the people there don't find offensive.

I've always found it ironic that a team with a Jewish owner, playing in a majority-black city, has no objection to keeping a name/logo like this. Defenders of the name argue that it is meant to "honor" native Americans. I'd like to see if Daniel Snyder thinks that a team named the "Washington Hebes" with a logo like this would be a nice way to honor Jews.

Abe Pollin thought the name "Bullets" had a negative connotation because of the violence in DC and changed the name of his team to the Wizards. That was certainly less offensive than "Redskins" but it shows the kind of class he had as well as sensitivity to the community.

Speaking as a Native American... I don't feel real honored.
