yeah dood, they are no joke. saw a nice one in tortola. my man was just crusin around, maybe about 3 feet of water. good 12" in diameter. i steered clear.

I never got stung, but I was surfing down the jersey shore many years ago, and slammed into/rolled around with/wrestled with a Skate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skate) by mistake. The shit came out my little bum, back in, and then turned into tears. One of the scariest moments of my life.

I see them and encounter them almost every weekend (or at least when I fish).
I wade-fish in Tampa Bay in grass/sand flats all over the place and I see them in various sizes. I would agree that the best thing to do is shuffle your feet. Also, if you are not familiar with the area you are in, wear some water shoes. They are cheap and might help if you happen to step on one. Most times, they will be moving away from you as you approach. I happened to step on one a few weeks ago, but it had no barb. It was either cut off, had not grown back yet after being used or it simply missed the mark when he swiped at me. I was lucky but know a few folks who have been barbed. Apparently, it hurts like a Mother-Fucker.
