We are hosting thanksgiving for the first time this year. I'm tempted to smoke the turkey but the Mrs thinks that its too much of a risk. Anyway what are your favorite side dishes? We are going to do some kind of stuffing, mashed potatoes, some veggies - not sure what yet, and my family recipe for cranberry sauce:
Canberry Jalapeño Sauce
* 1/2 cup water
* 1/2 cup vinegar
* 1 1/2 cups sugar
* 3-4 jalapeño peppers, chopped
* 12 oz bag fresh cranberries
Combine all ingredients and bring to a boil for 5 minutes. Add cranberries and boil additional 10-15 minutes. Mash with the back of a wooden spoon. Chill in refrigerator.

The bird....I'm in love with my smoker and wouldn't hesitate to do a turkey. Do you have propane, electric or charcoal?
As for sides:
-brussel sprouts, I know some people loath the little buggers but I love 'em....butter, salt, pepper and a bit of nutmeg
-scalloped potatoes, makes a nice alternative for those freaks who don't like stuffing
-leeks, I think a highly under used vegetable....saute them briefly, flambe with tequila and then finish with a bit of real maple syrop
-baby squash salad

Yes - love b sprouts - esp with bacon etc... We have a big green egg. I think my chick is going to make these potatoes (http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Potato-Gratin-with-Gruyere-and-Creme-Fraiche-107310) we substitute thyme for the parsley.

green beans w/bacon
brussel sprouts w/pancetta
I love oyster stuffing...and we deep fry our turkey but only worth it if you have quite a few birds to cook...I have been frying 9 or so birds every thanksgiving (keeps this introvert from having to socialize)...

that sounds awesome. the side i look forward to the most at thanksgiving is my grandmother's homemade cranberry and raspberry sauce. it's so freaking good.

I've been making cornbread and andouille stuffing the last few years. It's "nummy".
