I know this will be a good discussion, There are many players that had years that may never be duplicated. I say that the best had to be DiMaggio in 1941. Yes he had the 56 game hitting streak but also he struck out only 13 times that season.

1962 NBA season. Can't decide which is more impressive--Wilt Chamberlain over 50ppg & over 48 mpg or Oscar Robertson averaging a triple double while scoring over 30ppg.

Ty Cobb in 1911.
He hit .420 with a .467 OBP, 127 RBI's and 87 stolen bases.

Officially, I'm required to say Steve Carlton in 1972 (27 wins when the team only won 59).
Off the record, this isn't even close...Bob Gibson, 1968, 1.12 ERA...they changed the mound because of him.

This. Theyve changed the rules since then to increase scoring and if you hit half of that your considered an MVP candidate.

Those NBA years shouldn't even be included in NBA talk. There were so many shots that it was ridiculous. There was basically zero defense played. It was just people running back and forth and throwing up shots.

Yup.
The middle of the steroid era and the man throws a sub 2.00 ERA? That's retarded.

Yeah, Gretzky's numbers are ridiculous. Just absolutely unbelievable.

that's not even his highest total for a season.
he had 215 in 85/86. 52 goals/163 assists.

I just meant in general.
I remember when Messier moved into 2nd in points and he was still like 1k behind Gretzky.

In my mind the best pitcher of all time, hands down. It's almost criminal how well he pitched in the era he pitched in. I would go out of my way to watch his starts when he was in his prime.
Al Bundy, 1966, Polk High.

Pete in 1999:
243 ERA+, 313 K, .92 WHIP
2000:
291 ERA+, 284 K, .73 WHIP
I DEFY you to find a pitcher who had two better seasons back to back than that. His K/BB ratios for those years were 8.46 and 8.88 respectively.
I also have to throw in:
Rivera's 2008 (where he walked SIX BATTERS in 70+ innings, and finished with a 317 ERA+, and a .66 WHIP)
Any one of Bonds' Bondsian Steroids Craziness years (my personal fave: his 2003 year with the 1.422 OPS, the 263 OPS+, the 120 intentional walks, and the .403 EqA. and insane as the.403 EqA is, he also put up a .438 EqA in 2004, and a .428 EqA in 2001. His combined WARP3 for the years 2001-2004 is 48.6, which most guys don't put up in a CAREER)
As far as hockey goes:
Bobby Orr's 1970-71 season where he put up 37 goals, 102 assists, and a +/- of 124, as season which I think is more mind boggling than any of Gretzky's signature years when you consider the time frame, the type of game that was played at the time, and the role defensemen played (no one EVER rushed the puck before Orr did).
Mario Lemeiux's 1992-93. He put up 69/91/160....in 60 games. His 88-89 season deserves some mention too, where in 76 games he put up 85/114/199, including 31 PPG.
Brady's 2007 season deserves some consideration for best QB year ever, no? 4806 yards, 50 TD, 8 INT, 117 rating. He AVERAGED 300 yards a game.
