View Full Version : Back To School vs. Caddyshack
Having rewatched both recently, it's a lot closer than I remember. I'd still give the edge to Caddyshack, but it's not quite as strong a gap as I remember.

I can't imagine ever watching Back to School a second time.
The worst thing about the movie is his son, who is just painful to watch.
Rodney pretty much does the same schtick.
And there is a Cobra Kai Johnny sighting in that movie, which gives it extra points in my book.
Caddyshack has some pretty bad parts, too, namely everything with the Irish waitress, but the funny way outweighs them.

Sure , caddyshack is much more quoteable...doesn't make it. A better movie though. We get two danny elfman perfomances. A more seasoned dangerfield. A good performance from lou....agreed, the son is painful to watch, but we got the triple lindy!!! And sams little rant.... passion!!

Back to School is severely under rated but caddyshack still wins, and most of you are right the wussy little son does ruin a lot of the film, who was he blowing to get all his roles, I remember him from like 4 movies and most sucked.
And like the great thorton melon would have had offspring so wimpy, as if......

I can believe I'm going to type this, but I think caddyshack wins not only from a comedic standpoint, but I think its a better rounded movie as far as adding some drama with the comedy.

As much as I love Ted Knight in Caddy Shack, it is negated by Chevy Chase. Advantage: Back to School.

It's really not even a contest.
Caddyshack is light years funnier.
What is funny about Back To School is everybody's hatred for the tool of a son.
The 1st thing I was gonna knock that movie about was the son but it seems like most people already covered that.
Back To School does have some good parts but I find it to essentially be Rodney doing his standup w/ a movie wrapped around it.
On a similar not I recently watched Fletch again and that's a very funny movie simply for Chevy Chase's moronic dialog.

Keith Gordon is a terrible actor in BtS but he went on to become a decent director. He's directed a lot of TV (included multiple episodes of Dexter and Homicide) and also directed one of my favorite war films:

One thing that strikes me about Caddyshack is that people seem to like it as a series of one-liners and gags, not as a complete movie. There are scenes and segments of it that are brilliant, but my rule of thumb about this movie is that if Ted Knight, Rodney Dangerfield, Chevy Chase, or Bill Murray is not on the screen, fast forward until they are. You won't miss anything, really.

That's a good point and probably acurately potrays most people's feelings on the movie.
But then again how many comedies are you in for the plot ?
Also the series of one liners and gags in Caddyshack are much better than anything that Back To School musters.

these 4 lines sum it up. but yeah c'mon back to school is ridiculously funny but caddyshack may be best comedy of all time. the entire movie is quotable, you're all mentioning ted knight and rodney and chase but the guy who played spaulding and bryan doyle murray were f'n hilarious, everyone was just on point and in their prime
honestly, caddyshack by far. no question

As to which one ruined Sarah Holcomb more? BTW... Her boob scene, in Animal House, was one of the best things I ever experienced in my adolescence.

I agree with your assessment of Sarah's boob scene. You got me wondering about whatever became of Sarah, I found these articles. Apparently she started using drugs on the Animal House set and descended into mental illness and institutions. Sad.

I remember finally getting around to seeing Caddyshack in high school and thinking, "This is supposed to be a comedy classic in the tier of movies like Animal House and The Blues Brothers?" Eh, I just didn't laugh much. There are some funny lines here and there, but I really don't understand how it's gotten this reputation as one of the best comedies ever.
On the subject of underrated comedies, I'll throw in Used Cars. I love that one.

I went with "Back to School" because I'm a huge Rodney fan and having him the main star of a classic takes precedent over sharing that role. Plus, I'm not a big Chevy Chase or Bill Murray fan.
To me, Ted Knight was the second best star of "Caddyshack." Either way, both films were great, but both are still below "Easy Money" IMO.
