Alomar was brought in to spot fill but Met fans assumed he'd lose 10 years on his age and hit like in Toronto. Sorry, that's not how nature works.
I'm sorry, this is just not true. The season before he came to the Mets he had the best OPS of his career. He struggled a little a year before, but in 1999 he had the second best OPS of his career.
EDIT: And in 2000, "struggled" just means he didn't put up HoF first ballot numbers. He still had a great year for a 2B

Alomar was brought in to spot fill but Met fans assumed he'd lose 10 years on his age and hit like in Toronto. Sorry, that's not how nature works. His fielding was still fine, just not insane as he was in SD and Toronto. The guy led Toronto to two titles and was a fixture at all-star games and in the gold glove category (rightfully so unlike Jeter). Yes, I take MAJOR issue with pretty much ANY gold glove won by Jeter. Yet another vote that is getting destroyed and more suspect year in and year out. The fact that people even lobbied for Jeter as mvp when he wasn't even the mvp of his team is hilarious. Not to mention a certain catcher's HISTORIC year in Minny. Is anyone unbiased at this point? Hell, is anyone not influenced by the big market tag and bought all-star teams as well.
His # are great and I will not bitch when He is inducted into the Hall of Fame
But I smirked when I found out he may have AIDs and Smirked when I found out he was half a fag

He was awful with the Mets, but he has apologized to Hirshbeck - who supported his HOF candidacy. Basically he made an awful mistake in the heat of the moment, but according to all that know him, it was out of his character.
Yes, he deserves to be in the HOF, but he is FAR from the biggest jerk in baseball.

He went to the Mets in 2002 at 34 and his stats were clearly influenced by playing in CLeveland (park and stacked offensive lineup). Also, using OPS is an interesting way to sum up a player.

Look at his OPS+ then. It was insanely good in those years. Even considering the ballpark and line-up (granted, crappy team but he still had Piazza and productive Alfonzo in that line-up), no one on the planet expected the drastic decline Alomar had in ONE season.

how many home runs did Andre Dawson hit between the first year he was on the ballot until now?
how many home runs did Andre Dawson hit between the first year he was on the ballot until now?
I hear people say things like that alot (including Michael Kay today - ugh)
but what we really need is for these ballots to be public and explanations for changes.
There could be some legit changes- the people who ballot change (people die and are replaced), or one writer can be convinced by another to change their ballot, or the makeup of the ballot may make a writer change (I think it was Tim Kurkjian who said he had voted for Lee Smith previously, but this year had 10 people he thought more worthy so he took Smith off).
Let em say why- and take away the vote from those who say "I think player x is a hall of famer, but not first ballot"

there shouldnt be a 15 year eligibility bullshit
you are either a hall of famer or not
if your career has the stats worthy of a hall of fame induction then they should get in first ballot, first year eligible look at his career and if he's worthy put him in, if not then sorry see ya no more years on the ballot after that
cause inevitably we have what we had today, a guy who's been on the ballot for 8 years and didnt get in til the 9th try
so what happened in that time frame ?? the whole steroids thing and now people are looking at guys who they thought previously werent worthy but may now think they are cause of inflated numbers
same thing with blyleven, one of these years, almost this year, there wont be any clear cut choices and he'll get in or the veterans committee, which is a joke, will put him in

Actually, I think players should have eligability once every 10 years. In the context of history from today, pitching in the 60's was incredibly dominant. We may be more inclined TODAY to put a hitter from the 60's into the hall of fame than we may have been in the 80's. Also, this would eliminate some potential writers bias keeping certain players out, or putting certain players in.
I agree with you though. If a player doesn't get in this year, why would he get in next year? You are either in or not.
Alomar should be in, case closed.
Dawson should not be in, case closed.
Consensus should be higher than 75%.

Making it 90% and once a decade would detract some writers from having the stupid "first ballot" rule. Could you imagine how absurd it would be if Alomar wasn't in the hall of fame for the next 10 years?
Also, I say reduce the number of voters so a writer can't make an outrageous vote for quick publicity.

I say check/check-minus/check-plus system
check-plus = You don't have to write an essay next season.
check = you can vote next season, but you must write an essay to support your vote.

I wouldn't have a conversation about baseball with anyone that judges a pitcher based on wins, I can't believe some of them are hall of fame voters. It would be like judging a batter based on Runs.

I'll agree with this until they let in Arod or some other clear known cheater. At least there is still no proof Rose actually changed the games he played in. Now I understand he may make different choices if he actually had money on a game, but that's not as clear as Arod injecting...and he even lied for years about that. What else don't we know?

There are a few pitchers with 300+ wins like Perry and Niekro but they had winning percentages in the .530-550 range. Ryans winning pct wasnt the best but the 5700+ K's and 7 no hitters were a big factor. I think out of all of them Perry was the only one to win a Cy Young award.

Here's why Howard Bryant didn't vote for Alomar. (http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/commentary/news/story?id=4798793)
"To enter in on the first ballot means a player must compare with the immortals of the first class -- or, at the least, the first class of his time. The Mount Rushmore of Henderson's time would be (without steroid judgment): Bonds, Griffey, Clemens, Maddux and Alex Rodriguez. As good as he was, Alomar can't crack that group."
Wow, that may be one incredibly stupid statement. If you take OUT the steroid soaked players from that list and you have TWO clean faces. I'd argue in a SECOND that Alomar fits, especially since he was not only clean, but an AMAZING 2nd baseman. Earlier in the article he states how character and integrity are huge parts of the vote and he probably won't vote for the steroid linked players. Then he comes back on puts them on the "Mount Rushmore of Henderson's time.
I guess it's his style of shitty writing and voting alike, bc he did it at the start of the article as well. He first acts like the vote is not big whoop, then he touts how amazingly honored and privileged he is to get a vote...of which means very little. Take this asshole's vote away PLEASE.
See this is the problem I was talking about spoon: some of these guys have their own agendas to push. Still, Alomar was very close to the required number of votes and should get in the next time around.

In my mind they should be too. 2011 or not, the vote just becomes more suspect year in and year out. What about Biggio? Is he a good enough second baseman for a first time vote? I'm sorry, you simply can't judge everyone on steroid era first basemen and outfielders as that guy did and then say that he won't vote for them. Not to mention it's only HALF the equation, especially for anyone playing up the middle in my mind (SS, 2nd, C and CF).
Anyone who didn't vote should surely lose their vote. The guy who wrote this article and the other douche on the video at MLB.com saying the one spitting incident is the reason, in which I believe BAINES had to remind him he was personally attacked badly and it was one incident.

Honestly, I think the whole Dusty young pitcher thing is a bit overblown. The current philosophy of protecting young pitchers and pitch counts is one of the things I dislike about baseball. I'm not a DB fan, but as a former college pitcher I feel comfortable in saying that by the time you are 21 or 22 your arm is what it is. Either you have developed your mechanics and you have a durable elbow and shoulder, or you don't. Baker was cursed with a few pitchers who had absolutely awful mechanics in San Fran and Chicago.

I really like Nady and I'm pissed he didn't get more time in the Bronx. I think if he had stayed healthy the Yanks would have at least made him a reasonable offer.
I can't believe Sheets got $10 million. Don't get me wrong, he's a phenominal pitcher when he actually goes out there but there's so much risk involved.
I just thought the number was a little high, I expected him to sign for less. But if the A's actually have a healthy 1-2 in Sheets and Dursczcncnklzcncnsc;her, that's very solid for them.
I keep thinking the A's just signed Sheets hoping he'd have a good first half of the season so they could trade him for prospects.

I don't think so. I'd question his durability after the surgery, and I wouldn't expect a contender to give up too much youth for him in a pennant race.
I do think it's a great deal if he has anything left. With some support and some luck, if he gives them 13-14 wins that's a steal at 10 mil.

I am watching the 1970 All Star Game on MLB Channel, and its an abbreviated version of it with only the highlights of each at bat being shown.
I am not old enough to have watched games on television that year and I am wondering if this is the way they were presented when they were played originally ? Was there enough airtime in the 70's for All Star games to be televised live ?

who knows what the final deal will be, but honestly Minnesota had no choice if they wanted to keep him. moving into that new park (which i still dont know how they built it without a roof) and wanting to pack it to show fans they are commited to them meant signing their franchise player for the long term. its risky for his position, but he's a stud and a gamble they had to take.

What kind of payroll can the Twins realistically expect to be able to pay each year? If they can't go at least $80 or $90 million, the Mauer deal might be a problem long term.
I'd just hope it doesn't end up like the Reds signing Griffey, though I think Mauer is probably far more durable than Griffey was, even at that point.

I saw Peter Gammons address this on MLBN last night:
But regardless of the weather, the Twins will realize a significant bump in revenues with their new park. They're about to sign a new radio and TV deal.
"It's not quite a Seattle deal," said one club official, but another says it will put the Twins within "the top 8-10 revenue teams," giving them a higher payroll than the Dodgers.
Seems like they should be alright....

they're debating this on Jim Rome right now as I type this and one panelist is making a solid point. He says the deal is good, though it might pose a problem, and his reasoning is sound. He's probably taking less than what he could have gotten on the open market from the Yanks or Sox, but its really good for baseball that a guy like Mauer is staying in his hometown. Baseball needs a little more of this and it's refreshing to see. We've seen teams be competitive with low payrolls so why can't the Twins do it as well despite the one massive contract. It's all about finding value and finding it cheap.

If you doubt the ability for the Twins to sustain a major payroll, you might want to get a pen and paper.
Being a 30 game a year visitor to the Metrodome, and now fighting tooth and nail to get tickets to Target Field, I anticipate the new stadium bringing revenues very close to the top 30%. Look at the attendance stats too, the Twins routinely drew over 30,000, sometimes over 40,000 fans at the Metrodome. And who wants to go see a game at the Metrodome??? Suite revenue was not non-existent due to the Metropolitan Sports Commission, but in Target Field, it is very relevant.
The Twins are yearly threat to win the AL Central. The farm teams have typically been voted the best in baseball. No matter what happens when we lose a big name player, we replace them with one of the prospects, and they become superstars (Justin Morneau, Michael Cuddyer, Denard Span, etc.).
I have no idea why the Twins have been considered a "small market team". I grew up in South Dakota, and people live and die by the Twins there. As does western Wisconsin, Northern Iowa, Nebraska, North Dakota, Manitoba, western Ontario, and even Wyoming and Montana. That brings the population base to a significant competitor to the "large market teams".
I am too lazy to do the math right now, but there is a large amount of pride in our team. The Twins were always the lovable "could-be's" who made the best with what they had. Now they will finally get over the hump where they are profitable, competitive, and no longer the little guys.
It will be a great year.
Its probably because your fans don't turn out to the stadium very well and your owner is rich as sin & cheap as hell.
You should've been contracted.
Note: I should've referred to Twins fans as "fair weather assholes".

I didnt doubt it, i was stating what the guy on Rome said. I think they'll still have some money to play with, especially with increased stadium revenue (enjoy those April games in the snow outside) and the new TV deal. Obviously not, but these things can be further clarified as the season goes on. I don't know these things for sure, but even just after the first 11 or 12 games you start to get an idea of how the season will play out barring serious injuries. If a team goes, say, 9-2 in that time as opposed to 2-9 then you can start separating the champs from the also-rans! What a great game!

Fuckin' love this ump.
Umpire Joe West blasted the Yankees and Red Sox just before Wednesday's game, accusing the two clubs of being "pathetic and embarrassing" in dragging the pace of games and refusing to work with umpires. The two teams, notorious for the slow tempo of their games, were denied some timeouts in the batter's box by home plate umpire Angel Hernandez during Tuesday night's 6-4 Yankees victory. "They're the two clubs that don't try to pick up the pace," said West, chief of the umpiring crew that worked the three-game series in Boston. He was the home plate umpire Sunday. "They're two of the best teams in baseball. Why are they playing the slowest? "It's pathetic and embarrassing. They take too long to play."

Why would this be any more embarrassing then his norm?
It could be a test of your musical taste to see how far you make it into this shit. I bailed after 19 seconds.

Does anyone have FSN for their game carrier in their market? I believe that Fox Sports had a "local band" do a tribute song for their each team. Scott Stapp for So Florida. GB Leighton for FSN North (Twins) (http://www.foxsportsnorth.com/pages/video/?PID=xRjzMShP7KoqTBe1aKdeeJPPlTKKMSNy).
Both are EQUALLY terrible.
Anyone else have one?

...but not as horrible as the song that the Blessed Union of Souls wrote for the Reds!
