I had a Demonoid account, until the fucking website went down. Pirate Bay doesn't load some days. Mininova is usually not that helpful.

Just curious if anyone has a "Go to" torrent site they us now. If you're not comfortable posting about it in the thread please feel free to PM me the site in the website here.

This thread isn't asking for any specific files or promoting file sharing, keep it that way. I just want a discussion about the sites which aren't illegal.

I primarily stick to live bootleg sites, but as I stated in another thread I do use what.cd for pre-release material.

Since Demonoid crashed I have been using isohunt.com. They have been pretty solid and usually have what I am looking for.

Besides Piratebay being hit-or-miss for loading, they seem to have a lot more "hijacking adds" than I have experienced in the past. They are usually caught by my AV, but it is still a pain in the ass since I have to break contact mid-search.

demonoid is probably going to be back soon the tracker is online and functioning but the site is still down.

Personally I wouldn't touch a public tracker , try and get on a private trackers they rule! Trackers like minivoa, piratebay, torrentreactor, and even demonid to a extent suck they aren't that secure. I know lots of people that have gotten letters from their ISP about p2p use after using these sites. Private trackers tend to be more on the down low.

Also if your using one of the big sites like Minivoa or Piratebay you really don't have to look around for other sites because they use multiple trackers on their torrents. Also use Peer Guardian to cover your ass.

I would speculate that it downloads faster than Isohunt.

Regardless of which site you use, I highly recommend you install PeerBlock (http://www.peerblock.com/), and make sure you select Government, P2P, maybe Ads, unblock HTTP (only use when browsing to sites you are unsure of), and set it to auto-update daily.

It is a VERY good program, and will protect your computer from allowing connections from goverments ip ranges, millions of known detactor ip's and trackers (such as law offices), etc. It's legit and runs fantastic.

You might have noticed all the new magnet icons everywhere?

These are "magnet links", a link that lets you download a torrent directly in your BitTorrent client, instead of your browser. Most clients supports this (uTorrent, Vuze, rtorrent, whatever) and will get the relevant torrent data over the DHT network.

And DHT? It's a de-centralized peer to peer network that all modern clients join by default, even if they are currently not downloading any torrents. DHT can help you find peers and metadata when you choose to start a torrent download.

You might also have noticed that the tracker has been down lately? And that the upload page don't recommend trackers anymore! The development of DHT has reached a stage where a tracker is no longer needed to use a torrent. DHT (combined with PEX) is highly effective in finding peers without the need for a centralized service. If you run uTorrent you might have noticed in the tracker tab of your torrents that the [Peer Exchange] (PEX) row is often reporting a lot more peers than the trackers you might have for that torrent. These peers all came to you without the use of a central tracker service! This is what we consider to be the future. Faster and more stability for the users because there is no central point to rely upon.

Now that the decentralized system for finding peers is so well developed, TPB has decided that there is no need to run a tracker anymore, so it will remain down! It's the end of an era, but the era is no longer up2date. We have put a server in a museum already, and now the tracking can be put there as well.

By moving to a more decentralized system of handling tracking (DHT+PEX) and distributions of torrent files (Magnet Links), BitTorrent will become less vulnerable to downtime and outages:

* With decentralized peer acquisition, there is no central tracker that can be down.
* With decentralized fetching of metadata (torrents) we don't need to rely on a single server that stores and distributes torrent files.

(Before you tech geeks out there start complaining about the info_hash in the magnet links being in HEX ("isn't it supposed to be in base32?") - No! According to the BitTorrent specification it should be in HEX but the client may choose to also support the old base32 encoding. If your client doesn't support the HEX encoding, please upgrade to the latest version of you client! If it still doesn't work, send an email to the developers of your client and ask them to add support for it.)

This is the future. And the present.
what does this mean

what does this mean

It means turn on DHT in your torrent program and it will allow you to download stuff with out the site running a tracker.

Or join a private tracker where they keep the riff-raff out, scene groups release their caps directly to the site, torrents stay seeded otherwise people get kicked to the curb with out a warning and you don't have to worry about the garbage that is attached with a public tracker.

Question for you folks that are more web-savvy than myself...I recently got around to purchasing a Windows 7 laptop & installed PeerBlock. I noticed that it no longer includes a "Government" list when I check for updates. The lists now are Ads, Educational, P2P, & Spyware.

Basically my question is, am I still safe using just PeerBlock? Has anyone had any trouble with the Windows7 version? Anyone received any of those old pesky letters from your ISP about what you've been downloading?

"Gov" list - which contained governmental IP addresses - was merged into the "P2P"

I went on nasa site just now to test mine. Then found that nasa is on the list.

At school though i'm behind a fire wall so i use megaupload, mediafire, rapidshare and everyother file hosting site there is. Does anyone use these? Theres no need to upload and as long as you can find the file, theres no need for seeders.

The file hosts are fine for incidental use, but I could never rely on them for the bulk of my downloading. File size limits, captcha, wait periods...it's a real pain in the ass. Not to mention finding links is an ordeal by itself. Plenty of malicious sites out there waiting to bite you in the ass.

As far as torrents, a private tracker is the only way to go. Keep your eyes open (http://www.google.com/search?q=private+tracker+blog) for registration periods and find a place you like.

All things considered, however, I recommend switching to Usenet and never looking back.

Global Gaming Factory To Buy and Legalize Demonoid

"Global Gaming Factory’s planned acquisition of The Pirate Bay last summer surprised BitTorrent’s friends and foes alike. Eventually the deal didn’t go through due to financial problems, but after a few months of silence the company’s CEO returns to the stage. This time around there’s a new target for his ambitious plans, Demonoid, the largest semi-private BitTorrent community."

It's not likely that you'll find a service that will allow you to route all your traffic through their servers at full speed and not charge you for their trouble.

PeerBlock/PeerGuardian do what they promise. They block any connections from known problem IPs. That last part is where it gets tricky. The people who want to hurt you/catch you can get new IPs. This makes PB/PG a foolish choice for protection.

As always, I recommend avoiding torrents if at all possible, and getting a Usenet subscription instead.
