I was reading an article and in it the reporter says that he was interviewing this guy in the morning over bowls of oatmeal at some restaurant. Is it just me, or does that sound odd? I've always thought of oatmeal as a home-only food. Anyone else with me on this?

There is a place here in Montreal that makes an oatmeal that is so amazing. I swear it tastes like fresh baked apples, they also make one that tastes like pumpkin pie.
Oatmeal to make it great, takes a bit of effort. So I consider it an in and outside of the home food.
I don't get people that go to diners to eat cheerios or corn flakes though, or people that only go to breakfast for tea or coffee and toast.

i consider cereal a home-only food. i see no reason to pay for a bowl of cereal at a diner. it costs the same as getting the regular size box in the store.

Oatmeal at a Hispanic Deli or Restaurant is something that I dare not duplicate at home.

I'll NEVER understand anyone who goes out to a restaurant and pays $20 for a pasta dish.
You can buy a pound of it for under a buck.

You're really paying for the sauce...I've had some amazing sauces that were worth the money and I know I could not reproduce.
But most food is cheaper and better when cooked at home.

I'll pay good money for an excellent pasta-seafood combo. I could make it at home, but like Aggie said, with the right sauce and flavoring, totally worth it.
I eat oatmeal every morning, at my desk. It's bland and blah... but good for me, so I suffer through it. I do miss the days of ham, egg & cheeses every morning!!

You just have to know how to make it. I make a shitty oatmeal, but my mom makes it unbelievably delicious. McCann's Irish Oatmeal is great, but it takes an hour to make a good oatmeal, so most people never bother. Then you top it off with some honey, and it's the best thing ever.
PS: The instant stuff you make in 2 minutes isn't oatmeal, by the way, it's goat vomit sealed in a baggie, warmed with some water.

For my kids stuff like that and mac and cheese I do not like ordering from a restaurant. 4-7 dollars for something that costs under a dollar at home is rape.
Also I will not order Walleye or any other kind of fish that I have access to catching on my own. There is no restaurant that can cook Walleye as good as me or my mother or my grandmother.
If it is a fish that I cannot get on my own I will order it.

Yep.
But, according to the doctor, it's "better than nothing".

instant oatmeal is garbage. soak your oats in water (or milk) overnight with your fave extras and the cooking process is more than halved by morning. ^.^

I can't eat ribs out. Seems to messy to eat in public. Plus I have a few amazing rib recipes to make at home. My favorite meal to eat in public is breakfast. I'm to lazy in the morning to make my own.

Lobster. Restaurants often over cook it and over charge for it.

A friend ferments her oatmeal a bit before she will eat it. She soaks the steel cut oats for about a week in water and it's amazing how great it tastes. It's sort of extra creamy and the texture of the harder outside and the creamy inside is amazing.

And fresh pasta blows away boxed pasta...you just have to be sure the restaurant is making it fresh. Any italian restaurant worth a damn does.

A whole week? The directions on the can call for buttermilk for a tradtional finish, how does fermented oatmeal taste?

But back to home food......never got into roast turkey away from home, not so much because of the bird but because the stuffing is usually nasty and has all sorts of spices I'm not used to

I really think this is a great thread idea, when I think of home foods I immediately go to the slow cooker. Roasts with vegetables, potato soup (my dad always made this for football Sundays) and chili. The best thing in the world is to come back from school/work to a house with the smell of a slow cooked meal.

Damn you!!! I was out for dinner a few months ago and one of the people I was with ordered their potato soup and it was AMAZING. I'd forgot about it till you mentioned it and now I'm jonesin' for it.

As someone who's about to enter their late 30's I developed an appreciation for what my parents did for me and my brother. My Dad passed many years ago but thankfully Mom is still around and I truly cherish the time spent with her including coming to her place for a home cooked meal. Rarely fancy but always prepared with love and exactly as I like it.
I've even cooked a meat loaf in the slow cooker.
I like my slow cooker and have also done a meatloaf (I think this is the recipe I used (http://www.cooks.com/rec/view/0,1612,156182-246202,00.html)) and while OK I prefer it done in the oven. I like the crusty surface that the high heat produces. :p

I refuse to order chicken at a restaurant. There's something so basic about chicken that it seems retarded to me to pay money for someone to prepare it, i think. It seems like American peasant food or some shit.

I really want to try your mother's brisket recipe. One of my best friends got married and then had the reception on a ranch. Where you could see tomorrows lunch.

Tuna salad. Seems gross in a restaurant.
My first job was at a restaurant. One of the first duties I had was to make the tuna salad.
Step 1. Pour giant can of tuna into 5 gallon bucket.
Step 2. Pour gallon of mayo into 5 gallon bucket.
Step 3. Add spices
Step 4. Stick bare arm in bucket and stir.

Why be so coy about it. Come out and say what you mean. You want aged pussy. We all think about it. Those seductively saggy boobs, those fat creases all over her body, that overflowing gray bush that just beckons you to it. The flapping cunt lips of her enormous vagina that has been ravaged dozens of times.
We all think about, so just say it out loud.
Apologies for saying it in a food thread.
