Hi all.

Had a few questions for everyone regarding the Ipod touch.

1) If I'm listening to a radio station online, can I still do it while it's in a dock? I.E. through the browser or an app?

2) Can anyone recommend a small pair of speakers that don't get hot with a remote control?

My plan is to hook up my Ipod touch and listen through a dock. I want to listen to SiriusXM in the house, but I don't want to buy additional Sirius hardware, hence asking if I can listen to stuff via the dock.

My ultimate setup is to hook up an HD Radio through the AUX input.

The other big thing is this - I am NOT looking for "room filling sound" - I am looking for controlled sound with a remote control. I listen to the radio to go to sleep at night so I'm looking for sound that I can hear but my wife doesn't have to.

thanks for your help.

The sub may be a bit too much but at low volumes it isn't very loud.

Forgot to say this is going on a nightstand... that's a bit too big.

I know there's a HD radio/Dock combo from Sony, but apparently it runs very hot and has a fan (???) in it.

Yes, you can run your apps while it's docked.

You are looking for something like this
http://i35.tinypic.com/2nal9ht.jpg

1. Yes you can play audio via Apps while it is docked.
2. It doesn't give off heat
3. There is a AUX in the back
4. It has a remote

I have had this for years, before they came out with the iPhone/iTouch (but it still works with them) and got it for free so I can't give you a link but it's made by Logitech. Search them out they make a bunch of models that are decently priced.

Edit here are a bunch

Yeah, I think that's where I'm leaning. Altec Lansing makes a dock for about $100 bucks that looks like it has everything I want - speakers, AUX input, remote control, etc. I just need to see how big it is. What sucks is that there's a smaller version of it that would have been PERFECT but it doesn't have a remote.

Thanks for all your help so far.

matty,
what gen is your touch? if its a 2nd gen (im assuming it is), then you have to know that apple changed something in terms of the battery and what can and cant charge it.

my jbl sound station will charge any ipod EXCEPT 2nd gen touch. neither will my wall charger, even with the usb cable that came with the touch. for whatever reason, only the computer will charge the touch.

It was the plug that was slightly changed...and most docking devices have now accommodated that change.

One thing I'd point out here is that if you're going to use an iPhone in a dock, look for the "Works with iPhone" sticker on the box. That means it has shielding in it to keep you from getting the annoying-ass GSM interference buzz.

I haven't gotten yet. I asked for the newest version 32gig for my birthday/christmas.

Yeah - that's one of the reasons why I'm upgrading my sound system... the boombox I use in the bedroom for listening to the radio is old and picks up all sorts of interference from my laptop and printer. I'm hoping a new setup with alleviate the problem.

As for using an iphone - That would imply that I would use an Iphone or AT&T.

The main reason I'm getting a touch is so I can get the majority of the features an Iphone would have w/o the major cash layout. I don't like touch screens but I like the tech of the Ipod touch. I'd never use it for my cell phone though. Just unneccesary for my life.

Step 1) Walk into Apple Store
Step 2) Look at Apple Docks, like the iHome, and try them in store
Step 3) Buy the one you like the most

Wait -

Ihome is an apple brand? I thought it was just some off-shoot c-level brand.

i'd still be leery. of course, most of this stuff you can return.

the touch comes with its own charging plug. the plug is much smaller than the old ones.
oddly enough the new plug used with the wall charger does not work. the old plug used with the computer does work.
i dont get it.

then it is indeed a 2nd gen.

I was kinda pissed when I discovered my original car dock wouldn't charge my iTouch, but in the end I was happy as the newer FM modulators are much improved over what I had before.

I saw a dock in the Crutchfield catalog today that had a built in HD radio, it was about $200.

Yes, I saw this. As I said in the third post of the thread:

Apparently, the power brick that comes with it runs pretty hot and hums too.

So I've got 17 inches to work with for my dock and the HD radio.

The HD Radio is definite - I'm going to use the Sony XDRF1HD HD Radio Tuner. That's 6.4 inches.

Even though that runs hot too, it's got a lot of positive reviews on Amazon. It's either that or the Gigaware All-in-one deal from Radio Shack.

So it's up to the speakers. I'm looking at the Altec Lansing Moondance Home. That's 11 inches, but I can be off by a little on either side.

I was also looking at the Sony srsgu10ip but that may be too big and powerful for what I want.

The thing that sucks is finding the right speakers. I need ones that come with remote control, and all these little tiny ones do not come with remotes. Suck.

I don't think I've heard of anyone actually owning or using an HD radio. I thought it was a myth.

I'm doing it mainly because I get shitty reception of WFAN and it's 90% of what I listen to... and it gets weird interference from something.

Soooooo...

I went to Radio Shack (!) and bought their house brand (!!!!) Ipod Dock/HD Radio combo.

So far... so so. Good sound quality but I need a better antenna to pick up HD stations.
