no, its the same with a different layout. Same style keys and everything.

I believe you said you were going to get the droid, then the Incredible, then the ally, and now the D2?

how are you eligible for an upgrade already if you bought a phone in OCT? you have 1year contracts? and if are eligible from the droid x launch date till the end of the year you get a New for every 2 discount.

I said I was going to get the Droid... and then passed when I saw what the KB was like. That's what started the whole big-hands joke.

I said I looked at the Incredible and the Ally. I didn't say I was going to get them.

And yes, I have a one year contract for this very reason - I knew with the success of Droid, there was going to be a Droid 2, so I hedged my bet vs. a Verizon Iphone or a Droid 2.

I misspoke - Bought in December, Eligible for upgrade in October.

And finally this:

IT'S NOT THE SAME KEYBOARD, YOU FUCKING DOLT.

Don't poke the beaner with a stick. Just makes things worse.

I am just aghast that the so-called authority on the Droid here is either too stubborn or stupid to realize that the keyboards between D1 and D2 are fundamentally different, with different key sizes, locations, and most importantly, no longer flat.

thus then, they are not the same.

Granted the KB on the D2 isn't as good as the Touch Pro 2, but still.

And Android outsells iPhone for first half of the year (http://www.itbusinessedge.com/cm/community/news/mt/blog/report-android-outsells-iphone-during-first-half-of-2010/?cs=42572). Of course, when you have 50 models across all carriers compared to 2 phones on 1 carrier, of course it'll happen.

So screw this HTC EVO shortage...

Finally decided to go with the HTC EVO/sprint and jump from the shitty phones that are t-mobile. Verizon was just way to expensive for 3-4 lines and data/text messages.

Sprint can't get any Evo's in till Aug 18th (due to a shortage in screen parts), my contract ends the 13th so that sucks. Who knows if sprint will even get any by then. I want it now screw this slow ass blackberry!

Bob,

Droid X I would say rocks the fat ass. If you need a keyboard this comes out Thursday.

https://scache.vzw.com/multimedia/360_demos/mot_droid2/

You can wait to look at them both in stores on that day.

Keys dont look very Domed if you turn it to the farthest on its side and see the keys.

They both have 1ghz CPU's, 8gb ram.

Droid X is 4.3" screen, no keyboard. Droid2 is 3.7" screen w/keyboard.

But if you like the Droid2 see if you can find a droid 1. They are easier to root and put custom roms on.

The Droid X/2 have locked boot loaders so that isnt an option on them.

I see an option to create an AAC version. I do not see an option for Mp3. Any other ideas?

You must have an old version of itunes then, as I utilize it all the time.

Is there really any difference between evo and verizons top phones?

Verizon is just to expensive and I have 30-days to make sure the coverage is good in my areas with sprint. If the coverage is good theres no way I can pass up sprints deals on the family plan since I need 4 lines. I just keep thinking, what is the catch...

I don't give a shit about the 4g I realize its more marketing then actualy benefit for my area but I think the EVO still looks like a great phone.

Shut off the wifi and gps when you're not using it. It'll extend your battery life. Live wallpapers will also suck your battery life.

Best Apps:

Advanced Task Killer - Kills all apps currently running saving memory
Google Goggles - identifies landmarks and other things by taking a picture and gives you information about them
Google Shopper/ShopSavvy - You can scan the bar codes of products and compare prices with other local retailers and online
Radar Now - shows the weather radar approaching your location
Google Maps/Earth
Ringtone - free MP3 ring tones for your phone. Great quality
WireGoggles - Awesome camera effects
NFL Mobile - free
Google Translate - translator with text to speech
FxCamera - more great camera effects

I am also curious about must have apps for android. I have no apps with my BB and am trying to figure out the must have apps for when I get EVO. It is like a brave new world... Anyone know a good cheap gps yardage app for the golf course?

Instead of tapping your finger on each character you simple swipe over each character in a word. The software will then translate the path you made into words."

On the Droid X, if you click and hold on a message entry window, suck as for text messaging, the phone with buzz and then offer you the option of which typing tool you would like to use. Swype comes embedded into the Droid X. Take the tutorial ... and you will be on your way. I sent an email for work using Swype and it was waaaay fater than typing by thumb-tapping.

You won't regret the switch.

Once again I'm thinking of ditching my iPhone 3GS on AT&T (basically due to shitty coverage) and jumping on the Verizon bandwagon. if anyone picks up a Droid 2, I'm curious to hear how the battery is. I tried an Evo 4g for a few days but returned it due to SHIT battery life even after applying various battery saving tips. Plus it was just too big. The Sprint service was great though just as it was when I had Sprint years ago.

The Droid 2 seems like a nice compromise and I have to admit it would be nice to have a physical keyboard for typing out emails. I'm a bit worried though because I've heard some buzz about poor signal strength (but not verified yet other than what was mentioned in the engadget review) and poor battery life.

If the signal and battery are good on the droid 2 and I can find SOME way to have control of the music player via a headset (preferably wired) for advancing/playing/pausing tracks I'd be ready to make the jump I think. It looks like Android has made some progress with Voice Commands too recently for playing music (though from what I gather it still doesn't work with the built in music player only Last.fm/Pandora/etc) but it's a step in the right direction. The iPhone just does voice control so damn well from the headset with the iPod application.

I'm still holding out for the OTA before I make any rash decisions. If I get it and I don't see much difference, I'm gonna root and rom mine....but after we get some more stable releases first. And, some that have ALL the things working....who the fuck would root then rom their incredible after reading news of the camera not working? thats one of the sweet deals about 2.2 is the 720p....

if they are just normal Mp3's and Jpeg's it is just drag and drop.

once you connect your droid x to your pc, youll pull down the notification bar.

once there you will see something about usb connected, then hit then and a menu with 4 options pop up. Select mass storage mode.

then its basically like having a flash drive connected to your pc.

The only two things I don't like about my HTC Eris is when I go to type in a name in the text message address bar, once it identifies the name it will list every number I have in that contact's file, and also it will not voicedial via my bluetooth. Why would it do that? It should be listing only the contact's mobile number, there is no way I can send a text to a contact's house or work number.
The lack of voice dialing via bluetooth is bothersome too because I am on the road all day and need to be in contact with patients I deliver to. It is a distraction to have to dial the phone number manually then put it down and talk with my headset.

Does the Motorola DroidX or Droid 2 do that as well? This is the first smartphone I've used that has that flaw.

Don't know about the bluetooth but when you message someone after you start typing the name the phone will list all the contact numbers and emails for the person you're sending the message to. Sometimes I'll email web stuff to my chick since she can't surf the web on her phone.

Well they did change the color scheme of the messaging area.....

Yea, looks like that's it.

But seriously, does anyone have a link to the new features in this update? Im curious what they just put on my phone.

http://developer.android.com/sdk/android-2.2-highlights.html#UserFeatures

Off the top of my head.

Led flash is enabled for camcorder.

270 degree rotation.

Flash with Adobe 10.1 (I don't know if the update came with it or not.)

Try going to www.facebook.com on your phone. Log in. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click the "Full site" link. Once on the full site try clicking a friend the say way you would if you wanted to chat. If you can chat, you have flash. If no you need to downoad adobe 10.1. http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer10.html#android

Ya I can see the task killer being not being the most helpful thing. It does make closing past used programs easy though.

After 48 hours with the Evo I am still amazed at the shit it can do.

I am a bit scared to root it like you mentioned. Is there any other way to get rid of some of the things sprint pre-loads, there is a ton of apps I don't want/can't delete.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=690762

So if I root it will there be any programs at all? I don't know if I am advanced enough in android to start from straight up blank, or if I really want to take the chance at spending hours on end just trying to boot it up.

Getting rid of those pre-loaded programs is my goal now though as saving battery life is my key at the moment, is there any other way than to root it.

Looks like I also need to find a custom ROM if I plan on rooting it too eh.

I looked more into rooting but I just don;t know if I want to take the chance of messing up 4g. But I read that a lot of the roms are having probs with 4g. Don't really know if I want to take the chance of not having 4g work since I am in a good 4g area at my house.

Picking a ROM and what not seems like too much to do atm. Need my phone working on monday, maybe something I will do when I got some time to mess around.

So I guess from what I read the only way to get rid of the pre-loaded junk is to root? If so that is the suck.

FUCK YEAH F1!

For the preloaded apps, there's two ways to look at it. If you're sure you'll never want the preloaded stuff running just set your task killer to kill the process any time it's found running. That said, some understanding of how Android works will save you a ton of frustration when using a task killer. Android uses a garbage collector to start, stop and preload processes, the amount of memory allocated to these processes is not your concern from a battery life point of view, it takes the same amount of power to hold Nothing in memory as it does to hold something IF the process is not actively using some other part of the OS.

In essence if you had 10% of your memory allocated to running processes you could have the remaining 90% allocated to nothing or allocated to inactive processes and you would never see the difference. The only time you'll see an issue is when you have a bunch of active apps using a lot of memory, then you can use an a task killer as a kind of Ctrl Alt Delete/xkill or as a soft reboot if you're running slow.

I'm partial to a task killer named SystemPanel (which will give you a more detailed explanation of the paragraph I just wrote in it's help section) because it breaks processes up into 3 categories, active, inactive and internal, active means they're using some amount of battery power, inactive isn't using any power and internal may or may not be, but if you terminate it they'll just get restarted.

For rooting, I posted a link a few pages back in the thread to something called EasyRoot that costs between 1 and 5 bucks depending on what you choose to donate. Obviously do the research on how well it works for your model before you decide to root a new phone but for my droid it was literally 30 seconds, which is awesome because I'm really, really lazy. All that said, I've heard the same about a ton of ROMS having issues with 4G phones.

EDIT: I just realized you were already thinking about System Panel, yeah. Get it. I suck.

So addicted to this stupid home run game right now. Can't even go to sleep trying to get these gay ass gold balls.

Thanks for the root/rom advice still looking into it since i got 2.2 on the evo atm I will prolly wait it out a bit. Till I get fed up with battery life, seems fine for now.

JRummy's Kangerade with Chevy's Low Voltage Kernel.

Now that JRummy is taking a break I think I want to try out a different rom. I am considering CM6, BB V.4, UltimateDroid, or Lithium.

might need to try out some others, too. I've noticed with CM6 that it keeps starting up programs in the background after I run my taskkiller....although I've also read that taskkiller doesn't work on 2.2 roms anyways.

This low voltage kernal...is it just an update you do in recovery or is it some kinda funny *736898)!! shit you do on the keypad?

go check out the new samsung on tmobile, the vzw version will be almost identical, only it has a flash on the camera. 4 inch screen might be more reasonable for you, and its really thin/light.

The incredible has HORRIBLE battery life, almost HALF of the droid 2, on that fact alone i'd pick the droid 2. Plus the droid 2 already has android 2.2.

But if i were you i'd check out the samsung, many reviewers who found the X to be too large think the 4 inch screen is perfect.

I appreciate it, but I'm kind of set with my Verizon service. My buddy works at t mobile so I'll take a peak, but I highly doubt paying full price for a phone is a good idea in the end with shittier service.

LOL...I think I bricked my phone trying to go from CM6 Froyo mod back to stock 2.1 so I could get the official OTA.

heres what its doing after running a nandroid....

(after loading the data,datadata,etc)

restoring CACHE:

E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
(file exists)
E:Can't mount CACHE:recovery/command
E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
(file exists)
E:Can't mount CACHE:recovery/log

reboot, it goes to the HTC Incredible bootscreen and does nothing afterwards.

any clues?

well i was just playing with mine and think I missed a step....but thanks to the kind guys at XDA, they led me the right way. Had to run Unrevoked Forever to set it to S-OFF in HBOOT, then run the PB31IMG.zip and it installed all the way back to stock 2.1...which is what I was trying to do to begin with.

it was pretty neat toying around with Froyo...I just should've followed the instructions better....but now its working fine with 2.1 and stock now. Verizon dumbasses won't even notice the S-OFF if I have to get another refurb...so I'm good for the time being.

You root for superuser(dev) access.

You put a custom recovery.

YOU DO A NANDROID BACKUP!!!

Then you flash a custom rom of your choice. Different roms play nice with different recoveries so be careful.

These people are getting root access on their phone with is something 99% of the people out there will never do. If all you want is a phone that runs apps and will let you browse the web, then yes, that is what most folks will do with a Droid based phone. It's very intuitive and easy to use.

Most people who buy phones go into the store, ask for something pretty that looks like an iPhone and go home.

Trying what? To tell a guy who simply wants a phone that he doesn't have to act like a hacker in order to download some apps and make some phone calls?

You guys are in the minority. There is nothing wrong with that, he just wanted to make sure that what you are doing isnt normal.

Exactly - I just wanted to know if this is what I am facing to enjoy my Droid X. BTW... what is the real purpose and advantage of doing all of this "root" stuff anyway?

This is pretty legitimate, Mexi. I know it kills me to agree with Jezo, but he's right on the money.

That said, I've seen the Samsung Galaxy S both with and without a keyboard. What gives? The same for the Scorpion.

If the Scorpion is legitimately the same form as the Touch Pro 2 just with Sense and Android, that could be the perfect phone.

with root you can wifi tether, take screenshots, overclock, further you can install a custom recovery, install a new kernel or a whole rom

but why would i want to install a rom? because at some point your manufacturer will stop developing your phone...and if you have it for 2 years (g1 users) these roms keep your phone running the newest os.

i doubt any phone will be as popular as the original droid with rom builders just because no droid will have as large an install base. i wonder what the final sales number is for it.

Hacker? Dude if this was release day of the phone then MAYBE I could agree with you (even then the community gives step by step instructions) but rooting is a one click process for most of these phones.

And that minority is growing like crazy and will soon be at an even higher height, with the D1 no longer receiving major updates and users keeping to their 2 yr contracts they'll want more(especially hearing about features they don't have) and their hand will be forced.

Once you know what it's like to have a rooted phone running a custom ROM you can't go back to having stock anything.

Nope, even fucking apple sheep JB like crazy. I remember there was a jailbreak for iOS4 within two weeks of release. Most people I know with an i*hone or touch are jailbroken.
