Can they change the landscape mode? Wouldn't you need a sensor in the phone for it to work any other way?

instrument
12-08-2009, 09:58 PM
yes, the same sensor (acceleromator)that senses the phones in landscape mode when an application is open can sense it when there is no app open and you're on the home screen...its a software issue..i was assuming it would be a quick fix.

When I woke up this morning my update had downloaded and was ready to install. I was impressed how quickly it installed, I was expecting like 15 minutes of bullshit and restarts but it was done in under 5.

I just waited because all the reports I had heard didn't sound like this is the update you HAVE to have, so I let Verizon send it to me.

So far nothing big. Lock screen looks slightly different. I used task killer to get rid of all the auto loaded crap and now it's as it was again.

I wrote the whole list of apps I use on my blog yesterday.

http://www.justjon.net/?p=217

Any others I should be checking out?

And I installed the update. I don't like how the Google search widget is no longer flush with the top of the screen, otherwise the only difference I see is the lock screen. I miss the unlock wheel, but I liked the way everything was centered before instead of the mixed left and right justifications.

Ringdriod is nice for making ring tones from downloaded music .

Alice lets you know when your favorite bands will be playing in your area.

Backgrounds has a huge selection of backgrounds for your phone.

Meebo is a pretty good multiple IM platform app.

Opentable for making dinner reservations.

TuneWiki is a cool music player app that displays the lyrics for songs as they're playing.

Better Keyboard replaces the default onscreen keyboard with one that is easier to type on.

The only one that wasn't free was Better Keyboard. I think it was $3.

yeah. i used to "overcharge the battery in my old phone.

they just want you to run it down, then charge it up.

My old phone battery was actually BIGGER(thicker) than the replacement that went back in. Very odd.

What i do know is leave mine on the charger at work, since its playing music all day, then take it home and thats it. Charge the next day at work.

well when its plugged in playing media there is more power going out then sitting on the desk with the screen off using minimal power.

Its like power water in a cup with a small hole versus pouring it into a cup with a big hole.

The one with the small hole will over flow faster. Just like your battery.

Or like pouring water into a cup, draining it all the way. Then you have all that room.

or pouring water into a cup and then pouring out a bit, then power the equivalent into the cup. It will over flow.

then when you mount is (lol) you just drag and drop the files anywhere really.

or you can look through the file sctructures and make new ones if you want to look neat.
but you dont need to. once you select unmount from the notification panel again it will say "preparing sd card" it will then sort everything out.

or if you want something similiar to Itunes check out doubletwist.

This is my 1st smartphone, Im very happy with it. I do a lot with it and have yet to pay for an app. I personally think it's worth it.

Not sure about any rumors of a new phone yet. But to be honest I haven't been looking anymore since I bought the Droid and entered into a 2 year contract with Verizon. Only other shit I hear is Verizon iPhone sometime this coming summer, but that's not 100%. I'd say it's a slam dunk due to AT&T's inability to keep up with traffic, but nothing is ever written in stone with phone carriers.

If you're looking for a great smartphone on Verizon you will not be disappointed with it.

SO now I have to decide whether or not to hold out for a possible iPhone, or hit up the Droid. I'm reading a lot of good things about Droid, and that it has potential. I would rather not put money into asshole Apple either, but their phone is real nice.

I'm gonna head over to Verizon now to check out the phone hands on.

Death Metal Moe
12-29-2009, 08:35 AM
Just to let you know, my pal Grim had AT&T iPhone and gave it up when Verizon offered the Droid. He's extremely happy with it. So while I would never say the Droid is an iPhone "killer" I will say that it's an extremely good smartphone that has kept a former iPhone owner happy.

You will not be dissatisfied with the Droid. But go check it out for sure. I know Tenbats said the keyboard was too small for his hands, that's about the only negative thing I've heard about the phone.

I actually prefer Last.FM to pandora and slacker. Besides doing the personal radio thing, you can set it to log everything you play on your computer or devices, and besides a station based on that info you get all sorts of personal charts on what you're listening to.

I'm going to say this:

I love the idea of the Droid. I love the screen, I love the OS, I like a lot of things about it.

But what kills it for me is the keyboard. That's my only issue. Liz was witness to how upset I was after playing with the droid and realizing that it kinda sucks with my hands.

So - I am following the development of Android for the Touch Pro 2 very carefully. If it's released and stable, I'll join all y'all soon.

some of the display model (dummy ones) i have seen, seem to have more rounded keys.

But they are definitely not like mine that flat

Orb is great on the iPhone/touch especially for video. If you have TV tuner you're set. The only downside is the one time charge for their app but it's totally worth it (i had the demo app).

Yeah, I have Orb but I don't use it much anymore since the xm/sirius app was introduced.

I know this is off-topic but another way to watch your personal videos on your iphone/itouch is through dropbox. Open up a free account, and you can upload up to 2 gigs (more if you pay). The dropbox iphone app will play vids or music. I generally use dropbox to transfer files to friends, but occasionally I'll also use it for playback.

So let me get this straight. You bid on a Verizon phone, the phone Verizon is trying to get people away from AT&T with, and you're trying to put it on the AT&T system. A system that is already offering your the iPhone, one of, if not them most popular smart phones out now.

I'm really not understanding why you'd even bother.

From what I was made to understand while looking at a lot of phones late last year is AT&T uses the GSM system and Verizon uses the CDMA system. They are essentially 2 completely different signals. Each company's phones only have the one specific receiver inside them for their own system so no, you can't use the Droid on AT&T system in the same way I couldnt get a cracked iPhone to work on Verizon.

The specs mention both 2G and 3G and GSM as well as CDMA. I know my current phone is a "3G" phone, but I am not sure if "2G" and "3G" interchange. As to why I want the Droid, it is for the combined practicality of having both the touch screen and the actual keyboard, plus a better camera, plus better apps and because I'm getting pissed at Blackberry for dropping the ball on customers. I have the Blackerry Bold now and I have it paird with a iPod Touch and its a cool combo. But I'd rather carry one device. I like my blackberry but I think I'm due for a change.

Well Im not really sure about what kind of signals the 2G and 3G systems use, but pretty sure for talking, AT&T and Verizon use different systems, so you won't have cell phone service.

My only guess is the phone will receive "data" on the GSM signal. But the cell signal is something different and will not work on AT&T, there's no receiver in the phone for it.

You will 100% not get that Droid to work on AT&T, so stop asking and put it on Ebay.

Where are you getting that its supports GSM? The Motorola Droid that was released in the US doesn't support GSM EDGE (the 3G "flavor" of GSM), its strictly a CDMA2000 phone and won't work on AT&T's network.

It did not cost me nearly that much at all, but you are right, I should have researched it better. But Im very confident I will make my money back very quickly, and then some. I won it in a fluke and I think if it was during a reasonable hour, it would have went far higher. But look on ebay for it and you will see people buying them for over $500 easily.
Like I initially said, the reason I started this whole thing was because I was quite disappointed in Blackberry and wanted to jump ship.
But I have since learned of a new phone coming to AT&T in March and I will just wait it out and se what develops. I have almost a year left on my contract anyway and if AT&T and Blackberry cannot shape up, I am gone.
I just have some issues with Verizon that keeps me from going back to them. After having the iPod Touch for over 6 months now, I know that typing on the touch screen can never compare to the speed, accuracy and tactile feedback of a keyboard. That was my main draw to the Droid and I really wish this would have worked, but I have a feeling it wont, even though I have seen many sites that say it will (http://www.google.com/#hl=en&source=hp&q=motorola+milestone+at%26t&aq=4&aqi=g10&oq=motorola+milestone&fp=b36c7832dbb01be6)with the Milestone version of this Droid.

Sorry if my previous comment came off a touch harsh, not lashing out at you so much just get livid every time I think about how we (Canadians) get bent over and fucked in the shitter by our wireless companies.

As an example here's what I'm paying for my personal phone. For $75/month I get:
-500mb data usage (emails, video, surfing, etc.)
-5 numbers anywhere in Canada unlimited inbound/outbound
-200 minutes anytime local calling
-400 incoming minutes
-unlimited local evenings (between 9pm and 6am) and weekend calling
-voice mail (which is a billable option)
-call display (also billable)
-250 outbound text messages, unlimited inbound text messages

For my data stick its $40/month for 1gb usage plus an additional $6 for a "licencing" and "911" fee. I can barely tolerate the licencing fee as its their way to pass along the costs of the wireless spectrum fees paid to the gov't but why I have to pay a buck ninety five every month to pay for 911 services on a device I can't actually make a phone call on makes me want to kill kittens.

If you want to add a wait in a stored number (i.e. for passwords, etc.) the android OS uses a semicolon....

I want to add a contact or favorite to dial my voicemail access number and include my password I'd program the following: 1-403-955-6700;4242#

1-403-955-6700 is dialed and a prompt appears on the screen which you press to enter the password.

And no, thats not my voicemail access number or password.

True. The whole thing fit on a 16 gig sd card. It's mostly stuff I ripped myself.
Now that I know synching works, I'll add more.

What is the best file manager app? When I did the iTunes synch, I got some doubles loaded because they were already on the card. What's the best app for deleting those doubles?

My entire iTunes library is now on my phone.

Yeah, that wouldn't work for me...or can you pick and choose what you transfer?

It's probably still unnecessary for me, as the Squeezebox app allows me to wirelessly transfer songs from my library.

True. But nearly doubling what I had on my stupid iPod touch feels good. I have enough material that needs ripping and transfering. I'm going to look into a 32 gig SD.
That should hold me for a while.
