View Full Version : It's Bonfire night here in England

an annual celebration on the evening of 5 November. It marks the downfall of the Gunpowder Plot of 5 November 1605, in which a number of Catholic conspirators, including Guy Fawkes, attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament, in London.
I'm heading out soon to see a fire work display. Should be a fun time.
Why we celebrate it is beyond me though. It's cool to go to community firework displays or private ones and eat different foods associated with this night. Such as baked potatoes and pork pie and mushy peas. (you probably wouldn't like it) Parkin which is like a cold treacle flavoured cake and candy apples.

Fuckin' starvin!
Enjoy the fireworks! It's the closest thing the Brits have to the 4th of July.

That would be July 3rd or 5th wouldnt it?
It is though really. Plus I heard ron talking about mischief night the other day. The night before Halloween. We do that on November 4th and it's origin is to do with guy fawkes apparently.

Considering my knowledge of Guy Fawkes is limited to the movie "V", does most of England celebrate the fact that he almost blew up Parliament (did he even really have a chance, or has fact and fiction blurred into legend by this point?) or are they celebrating the fact that he was stopped?
C'mon ya limeys, educate us.

Why would citizens celebrate the idea of terrorism by burning effigies of Guy Fawkes?
They are celebrating the failure of the plot.

I'm sure there are people there now who are Guy Fawkes' side... what do they do?

They didn't have the term "terrorism" back then.
But that's what it was...conspiracy to commit a terrorist act. Much like the IRA.

if you saw where i lived i'm sure you'd think it was a shit hole! My house mate is a brick layer and I'm his labourer. While work was quiet over the summer we did the garden. It's a beacon on a mostly government housing estate. That doesn't mean it's awful it was just one of Maggie Thatchers ideas in the 70s and 80s so people who aren't form money can own their own homes.
It's not so much like a project that you have in the US but the equivalent i guess. Our garden is shit hot though. Even if i say so myself.

Probably! but we didn't. To build if properly you have to buy a "Fire Ring" which can only bought from America. Postage on it would've cost over a hundred dollars which was a little beyond our budget because we over spend on the block paving.
We used copper pipe and ubends and hooked it up to what we call a jubilee clip which makes thinks air/ gas tight and we attach to a calor gas bottle. Which need to be replaced after about 10 hours. We only use if for about 4 hours at a time and they cost about 30 pounds so it's not too bad.
We also built a rotisserie into the BBQ which is super cool. Will have to dig out some pics.
It's completely safe though. I think  hehe.

Ha right. It was about 600 quid for materials including the rotisserie on the BBQ which cost about 150 all told. Had to go to the scrap yard and buy a motor from an old Peugeout 306 car which is the only windscreen wiper moter that went all the way around and not from right to left. We attached it to some cogs from a bicycle to slow it down to the right speed so it would slowly roast a joint of Gammon without going around too quickly.
That probably cost the most apart from the block paving because we had to sort the electrics out to work to the correct ampage without burning out. It was probably more trouble than it was worth to be fair but we thought it would finish things off nicely and give it the wow factor. Will find some pics now.

Private Bonfires are illegal in NJ. Those public bonfire pits that you are talking about are usually supervised by the local Fire Dept and are LARGE SCALE. In England(not sure if anyone still does it) you can burn yard waste and the like on your property without a permit...mainly because there aren't trees everywhere you look like here in NJ. Fire pits are a different thing because they are small and controlled.
