SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) ― A California jury has awarded $16.5 million to the family of a 28-year-old woman who died after participating in a radio station's water-drinking contest.

Jennifer Strange, a mother of three, died of acute water intoxication in January 2007 after the challenge to see which contestant could drink the most water without using the restroom. A Nintendo Wii video game was the prize for winning the "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" contest.

On Thursday, Sacramento County jurors found Entercom Sacramento LLC, a subsidiary of Philadelphia-based Entercom Communications Corp., liable for the actions of its employees at Sacramento radio station KDND-FM. The station fired 10 employees after the death.

i saw this. while i have mixed feelings, i think that common sense should have prevailed. the station should have thought about this a lil more before doing it, but the mom should have used common sense in knowing when enough is enough.

while i feel horrible for the kids that their mom is a) gone b) really fucking stupid, i cant wipe the hands of the station clean either.

I feel this is almost a sane decision, as we all pay for these setelments indirectly.

I'm surprised they didn't sue the water company for making such a dangerous product. How soon before water bottles are required to include a warning label that drinking too much may cause death?

if they just would've drank gatorade, she'd be fine right now.
