Well, all that's left to stand against a full scale revival of the Evil Empire are the defending champs.

I wanted this, too.
This is where we find out whether this lil' Phillies team is primed for a real dynasty or not. If it was the Angels, the Phils would still be disrespected nationally.
If they take down the Yankees, it will be undeniable at that point.

So are you saying this series is going to have some kind of national sentiment ?
It'll be big on the east coast and maybe pick up a few more viewers that want to see the Yankees lose but it'll probably have similar viewing numbers to the Mets/Yankees series.

It won't have any national anything.
This will be a great WS because it has the two best teams in the sport by a wide margine.
The only edge is give the Yankees with is they have Mariano Rivera and they don't.
Otherwise, this series is very evenly matched.
This should be great.

Heres a tip, when a Northeast team isnt in the World Series, thats when its usually a flop in the ratings. With very few team exceptions like the Cubs or Dodgers.
The country will watch it because its the World Series, and there are two amazing teams playing in it. The two best offensive teams in all of baseball actually. Not to mention 2 teams that have been around over 100 years each.

So the Phillies/Tampa series from last year, including eastern teams, which had a single digit rating of 8.4 ( the lowest ever ) proves your point ?
The rest of the country isn't as enthralled with this as you might think.
Baseball itself is falling off nationally and you think people in the rest of the country care about a 100 year tradition that isn't theirs ?

And the Philies, the other half of TripleSkeet's " You Can't Miss This World Series Because They've Been Around For 100 years " were also in that series and meet all of his criteria.
Good team, east coast, big following, been around 100 years, etc ...

It couldve been any NL team vs. Tampa and wouldve gotten the same numbers. Nobody gave a fuck about that team....even the people FROM Tampa. Thats why you could walk up and buy World Series tickets at the window on gameday at their stadium.
But more importantly, why the fuck should I care what the hayseeds in middle America want to see anyway? I dont give a fuck if they wanna see Phillies Yankees or not. All I care about is me and my city, and this is exactly the matchup we wanted. When the ratings come out, well see how they did then.

Now don't get me wrong... To win the pennant back to back years is impressive as shit in this era of baseball. I ain't knocking the Frillies. But the Yankees after not making the playoffs last year, after going 0-8 against the Red Sox at the start of the season, after not having Arod for the first six weeks, after Nick Swisher being the best player on the team for the first month.... To dominate the last half of the year and walk into the playoffs and ontop of that end their Angels curse makes this a legit World Series team. It wasn't luck.

Thats not the point.
The point is when your game 1 and 2 starters and your starting LF were not on the team last year, its not the same team from last year.
Seth Everett did a nice job of breaking down this series on XM Home Plate.
If the Phils are up 2-1 after three, the Yanks are in huge trouble. They're almost guaranteed to throw Sabathia on three days rest in Game 4, which they have to win or it's over.
If he wins, and it goes to 2-2, it forces Girardi's hand as to whether to start Gaudin in a tied series with three to play, or throw Burnett and Pettitte on three days rest which is almost equally as questionable a move.
On the flip side, if the Yankees are up 2-1, they can sneak Gaudin in for Game 4, use Sabathia in Game 5 on full rest, Burnett in six on full rest, and Pettitte in seven, with Sabathia available out of the 'pen. It saves their rotation and puts them back at a competitive advantage.
Now if you look at the first three games:
1) Sabathia vs. Lee -- slight edge to the Yanks (Lee and Sabathia should match each other pretty well...likely a bullpen game, where you have to give the edge to the Yankees for being the home team and being able to use Rivera in a tie game in the 8th and 9th or 9th and 10th if it comes to that.
2) Burnett vs. Martinez -- slight edge to the Yanks (Burnett's a train wreck, but nobody knows what to expect out of Pedro...another bullpen game....give another slight edge to the Yanks because of Rivera).
3) Pettitte vs. Hamels -- slight edge to the Phils (most of the same advantage for the Yanks apply to the Phils in the middle portion of this series. It helps them to be able to walk it off late so they can burn Lidge in a close tie game).
So this comes down to the Phillies stealing one of the first two in Yankee stadium. If the Phils get one, they'll win in five or six.
If the Yanks hold serve in the first two, they could win the series anywhere from four to six games.
This series will not go seven.

Who said it was the same team as last season? Just the fact that Burrell is gone shows that. But you cant say signing Ibanez and trading for Lee is the same thing as going out and outbidding the rest of the league for Sabathia, Burnett and Texiera. Thats fucking retarded.
Its not you that said it, i think it was Geno.

It is the same thing. It's two teams, working within the system they're allowed, to better their teams.
Yea they are both working within the system they are allowed but its not the fucking same thing. Seriously, youre talking nonsense now. And I dont even give a fuck. They had to pay twice the money to get to the same spot the Phillies are.
It is the same thing. It's two teams, working within the system they're allowed, to better their teams.
Who was the last homegrown player the Yankees lost because they couldn't afford to keep them or were outbid for his services?
Their business model is perfectly within the rules, but it certainly cheapens any accomplishment these teams have when you drop half a billion in contracts in one off-season, and never have to go through what literally every other team in baseball does in terms of keeping homegrown players.

Don't see how it does.
So you're saying if the Philles had the same money at their disposal as the Yankees do... They wouldn't use it?
Don't see how it does.
So you're saying if the Philles had the same money at their disposal as the Yankees do... They wouldn't use it?
Of course they would.
And as a Phillies fan, I would acknowledge that it would be a little less special because of that, if they did that.
I think that's the point everyone is eventually trying to get around to.
I don't believe in a salary cap for baseball, and I don't believe the Yankees acting as they do is necessarily bad for baseball.
But the Yankees winning a championship just isn't as meaningful or impressive as most other teams winning a championship because of how they operate (again, I'm not even sure that's a bad thing). The economic reality is that no team can ever outdraw or outspend them, which means they'll never lose a player they develop internally if they want to keep the person, and they'll always be a bidder for the top free agents on the market year to year. It's such a large advantage that it's just not a surprise when they do well.
Part of what makes watching these Phillies teams so fun (and excruciatingly nerve-racking) is the very real threat that Ryan Howard, Cliff Lee, Jimmy Rollins, and Cole Hamels won't be here three years from now.
There's a finite shelf life for this core because of the economics. Every team, even Boston and the Mets, deals with that to a degree.
It's almost inconceivable that the Yankees will ever be in that position again. The only way that could ever come about is if the Steinbrenners sell down the road to someone who just sucks every dollar out of the operation they can.

I don't think TripleSkeet will win either. I'll take that bet.
I will also bet that TripleSkeet isn't playing right now. I'll go double-down that he is at home posting in his boxers right now.

Lee could have pitched 4 more innings
Yanks middle Relief is too weak to keep the Phills off the board
