Following off of the discussion in the listening thread, do you think Married with Children was great, or did you find it to be a hacky, unfunny, reptitive show.
Some here have called it hack, while others accuse such people of being eltist.
Let's see what .Net thinks.

MWC is one of the only reasons FOX survived its early network days. Maybe thats a con for the show, but I thought it was hysterical. It was also really edgy and kinda groundbreaking in its own way. It pushed the limits of jokes about sex, murder and suicide. Its still not as funny as Curb though.

That's really not true. People point to it and The Simpsons and even 21 Jump Street as the shows that "saved" Fox, but Fox wasn't going anywhere. Rubert Murdoch has insanely deep pockets and based on the accounts I've read of the network's creation he wasn't going to let it die until it took off. He would have just kept dumping money into it until something took off.

I guess Murdoch was too big to fail, but it was their first big ratings hit. I think the show encouraged other regions to carry the FOX network. Wasnt FOX not available, or hard to get in certain parts of the country in the early days? Cant remember.

I think each region had local channels that jumped at FOX because they didn't have any of the big three and were only airing syndicated shows and re-run movies.
Fox gave them the chance to air stuff not seen before or on other channels.

It was definitely their first big hit, that's true. You're also right that Fox wasn't across the country for the first few years it was on, that's why it was such a big deal when The Simpsons matched The Cosby Show's ratings because even at that point Fox was only carried by something like 75-80% of the country.

I'm doing to disagree. Married... with Children was pushing the envelope of good taste on TV before Howard Stern had a chance to. Jeff Dunham and Larry the Cable Guy are white-bread, pandering, safe shit.
I'm waiting for a parody of Dunham's Achmed where a man of middle eastern decent pulls a business suit-wearing skeleton out of his doll chest and makes jokes about SUVs and botched lattes. I wonder what his catch phrase would be? I'll sue you!
