Have you seen that BMW commercial where they say, "80: the number of minutes in the world's longest standing ovation."

80 minutes? 80 minutes of clapping?

I had to investigate.

Apparently, it didn't happen too long ago, and - it's true.

I've found various sources that say the same thing (http://www.boncherry.com/blog/2009/10/15/the-longest-standing-ovation-in-the-history-of-opera-80-minutes-and-101-curtain-calls/):

The longest standing ovation in the history occurs in an opera house: Placido Domingo in Otello, in Vienna on June 30th,1991 it lasted for 80 minutes and 101 curtain calls.

Placido Domingo on the moment:

“You don’t know anymore what to do, you know? You go out, and the public is still there. And you say, ‘Well, what are we doing?’ And you come out again, and you take a little longer to come next time. And you say, ‘I hope they go.’ No, they continue. But it was a great, great experience, very thrilling.

LEEEAAAVEEEE!!!!!

Seriously though... that's almost an hour and a half of clapping and almost 1.3 curtain calls per minute. If true... such a surreal 80 minutes... and what was he doing, just walking on and off stage constantly?

I'm finding this hard to believe.

That's funny I did the exact same thing when I saw the commercial. Seems unbelievable for something so stupid. The '101 curtain calls' is the most bizarre thing. You're right, he must have just walked on and off stage constantly.

This had to be a setup. Who in their right mind would stand there and clap for an hour and 20 minutes?

He must have sung the shit out of that opera.

I wouldn't give the second coming of Christ 80 minutes, let alone that screaming Gallego.

He must have saved a baby falling from one of the balconies while he was singing and not even missed a note.

LIES!!!!!

In actuality, the longest standing ovation was probably for Kim-il Sung or Kim Jong-il. There is an anecdote that at one point he made some proclamation in congress or some such and a standing ovation was started. But then, it wouldn't stop, because no one wanted to be the first one to stop clapping (you know, just in case). Eventually, people started falling over from exhaustion.

Don't remember where I heard it.

Doubt it, I'm Russian, and I would have heard about such a story about Stalin.

It was after he disguised himself as an umpire and stopped Reggie Jackson and Mr. Rourke from assassinating Queen Elizabeth.

I would have to imagine that 80 minues of clapping would hurt like hell. What a fucked up situation.

I have to imagine that about 15 minutes in some in attendance were starting to hate everyone else in the audience.

It's like some horrible nightmare, where they won't stop clapping because he keeps coming out and he keeps coming out because they keep clapping and after 80 minutes they're just shrieking in agony as they slap wet, shattered bags of meat and bone together and he just keeps coming out on stage, weeping at the sight of it YET NOBODY CAN STOP.

If this prick would have just walked off and stayed off, the applause would have ended.

I heard on my local talk radio show that Dane Cook did a show just short of eight hours.

My money is on SHussein for the longest ovation on fear of assassination.
