Scientists dig Earth to Find Hell?

ANyone ever heard of this story? My GF told me about this story and believes it up and down but in the 1980's Siberian scientists drill into the Earth and after 9 miles of digging, they drop a sensative microphone down the hole to listen to what they thought were people screaming. Here's the audio but it sounds more like people in a mall during the christmas season. What do you guys think or know about this?

I'm a bit offended by the blaming of christians for the propagation of this story. I've never heard the story used for the purpose reported by snopes. It certainly has an xfile flavor to it though, and has earned its place around the campfire.

Riddle me this, if heaven is supposed to be "up" why do people bow their heads to pray? Isn't that like talking to the devil? I think that's why all these prayers aren't getting answered, god can't hear anyone because they are speaking in the wrong direction!
