View Full Version : What's the Deal with the Golden Key Society?

Having finished school this past August, a package showed up from the "Golden Key International Honour Society" trying to get $70 from me to sign up. I assumed it was just one of those "100 Local Most Whatever"-type scams, but looking into it it seems like it might actually be of some use, namely it how it looks good on resumes and gives access to a number of decent grad school scholarships (as well has helping get into a lot of grad schools). I did some reasearch and for the most part it seems legit. Is this thing on the level or would I just be kissing $70 away?

Would Wikipedia lie to me?!?
The Golden Key International Honour Society is an Atlanta, Georgia-based non-profit organization founded in 1977 to recognise academic achievement among college and university students in all disciplines. Golden Key currently has over 365 chapters at colleges and universities in seven countries: Australia, Canada, Malaysia, New Zealand, South Africa, United Arab Emirates and the United States. Golden Key is the world's largest collegiate honor society. Membership into Golden Key is by invitation only, to the top 15% of college/university sophomores, juniors and seniors, 2nd and 3rd year students and top performing US graduate students in all fields of study, based solely on the criteria of their academic achievements.
Golden Key offers a number of services for its members. These include résumé and graduate program assistance, career planning and opportunities, leadership opportunities, networking, and member discounts. Golden Key also offers more than $500,000 annually in scholarships and awards to its members along with a variety of other opportunities, both academic and career. Golden Key's core values include community service and its chapters are involved in a wide variety of volunteer projects in their local communities such as Habitat for Humanity, Terry Fox Run, Make a Difference Day, and various literacy service opportunities.
Golden Key is an active member of several organizations, including the Association of College Honor Societies, an American agency certifying college and university honor societies. A recent ACHS report stated that no other honor society provides more tangible benefits and services to its members than Golden Key.
The only controversy that seems to be out there is how much they're paying in salaries to their bigwigs compared to how much they're giving out in scholarships.
Helllllp! If someone else has some experience with this spill the beans!

I guess you might be able to get some of that $500k they give out.
No idea about getting into a better grad school.
How much more school do you need? Don't you have Ph.D or something?

What was your GPA in undergrad? Grad Schools are more concerned with your academic ability then your associations. I highly doubt that the admissions review ever comes down to "well, this guy was in one more club then this other guy and, oh, look at this, he's a Golden Key!"
Go buy yourself something nice.

Are you familiar with Hayden White? He's a literary critic concerned with the narrative of history. Very interesting stuff, though his argument does point out that history is an unstable story by which we understand prior events - not that we have any other choice.

You only need your BA in History in IL, I thought.
Your master's should be in Secondary Education - concentration of History.
Do that first.

Again, depends on the state. I'm still not sure where I actually want to be when I start teaching.

Yeah, I've been mulling over whether to do that or get one in history. I appreciate the advice.

The only reason I suggest it is because I am (still) working on my masters in education and should hopefully earn my PhD in another 5 years.
Early Childhood/Childhood (birth - grade 6) is my concentration, curriculum development.
While I do that, I am also taking additional courses in chemistry (undergrad) so I may also be certified to teach grades 7-12.
My plan is also the same, I want to teach at university level at some point. I'm just not sure where. Luckily, degrees from NY can go to any state and teach.
There are very few states that mandate teachers have a Master's.

Yeah, that's definitely with the idea of having the option of teaching at the university level.
I'm also looking into doing a 10-month teaching session with AmeriCorps to help offset my federal loans and get some "on the job" training.

Let me recommend the Chicago Teaching fellows program.
I was accepted to the NYC one about two years ago while I was without funding at one point but didn't accept it (a decision I regret).

I've also interviewed for the Chicago, DC and Philly fellows program though I was not accepted because my interest was elementary and not secondary.
I really think that this might be a great fit for you. The program is amazing plus there are more opportunities for carreer advancement that AmeriCorps.

You won't be disappointed.
These programs are funded by the school districts, unlike AmeriCorps.
So, they directly fill vacant positions with people from this program.
Full salary, school (for free or at discount removed from your salary), and all the benefits right away.

Wow. Same here. At the last second I decided I don't want anything to do with high school kids. I, however, do not regret my decision.
