So, last night, my TV died. I get sound but no picture. I don't even see the volume bars when I put ip the volume. I don't have the strength to carry it down two flights of stairs to get it fixed, nor do I want to buy a new TV. SO, I just canceled my cable.
I had Comcast. I had a premium package. I'll be saving $85/month. Plus I put my land line "on hold" for 9 months. I'll be saving $110 per month.
I'm not used to the quiet. That's why I had the TV on for the most part. I think I'll survive.

Don't forget about all of the web based sites for your viewing pleasure! Hulu and Fancast, for starters.

I'm so into hulu, papabear. Rumor has it that Comcast wants to "invest" in hulu whcih will DESTROY it.
I have NOTHING toolowbrow.

I love Hulu, too. I just started using Fancast. Besides the network shows, HERE'S (http://www.fancast.com/movies) a list of the movies they have. BTW... You have Netflix, right? I think you can watch movies online with them, too.

If you need a TV, I may be able to get you one...no charge. My father is becoming a bit of a pack rat and I am helping to clean out his place. I know he has at least two TV's not being used by anyone at his house.

I have a nice, new lcd flatscreen upstairs but the downstairs 27 incher bit the dust... I replaced it with a 2YO 36" for nothing. They're giving away big TVs on Craigslist! If you need a new one go on there and you'll score one for next to nothing (or nothing in my case).

I also have Nothing! It's great fun. Now you can read all those books you've always wanted to read, or spend your time drawing or painting!
For tv/movies I have this (http://www.roku.com/). It's all you need to get your fill and still save your $110 a month. Assuming you have netflix.

I've been debating canceling cable for quite some time.
As infrequently as I watch TV it hardly seems worth it.

I had cable (that I subscribed to) for only 2 years ending in 05.
The places I've lived in since that apartment either didn't have cable or the cable was included.
Even in the situations where I had cable, it only got used for Sabres games if I was home.
When I move into my house in a couple of weeks, I plan on putting up an antenna to pick up all the local HDTV stations but I will not get cable ever again.
Almost everything can be viewed via internet even if it isn't supposed to be.

We barely watch any shows on cable. We watch mostly our DVDs from Netflix, and if we're into a show, we'll catch it on the internet.
If not for the sports, i'd probably strongly consider giving it up.

Not having TV is not as big of a deal as we think. My wife and I go through phases (and houses) where we don't have TV for a while, and it is pretty nice to spend the evening listening to music and reading. We are about to enter a no-TV phase when we buy our first house in the next few months, and I am actually looking forward to it. One thing we are considering is increasing our Netflix subscription above basic, but having no cable. I encourage you to get a friend to help get that broken TV into the dumpster. A dead appliance gathering dust can be discouraging.

In addition to not keeping cable, I am seriously contemplating selling all my DVDs and CDs.
I want to reduce clutter.
Every movie I own, I have digitized and on my computer in DivX format.
Every CD I won, is on iTunes and also backed up.
Smart decision or bad one?

Anyway..... I have lived at my house for 2 years (give or take a few) and still have not got cable.
There is no reason too.
Anything you want is on the internet. If its not...go to block buster and rip it to your PC.

we don't have anything either. I canceled our dish network package over the summer. We have a few local channels. Hasn't bothered me that much. My husband was a little pissed when he couldn't get the Twins games though.

Cancelled cable ($85 a month with COX) and bought a Roku box. I can use my Netflix or Amazon on demand on it. I <3 my Roku.

I just have the basic cable package and even that is just for, like, 10 channels outside of the networks. No fancy TV or DVD player and all that nonsense.

Sorry to hear that. I know when I decided to stop watching TV it was a bit of an adjustment, it must be even worse when you are kinda forced to make that break, suddenly.
But you will survive. You'll probably be surprised how quickly you adjust to it being gone too. Flip a radio on for some noise, follow your favorite shows online and enjoy the $$$ savings.

I actually did just the opposite recently. I was living sans cable for a while but now work for a telecommunications provider and receive every channel (including Playboy) and internet for free. The amount of channels available is pretty disgusting. While I do like having certain channels and the on demand service, I could definitely go without.
