My brother got scammed on craig's list today. Trying to sell some drums. They sent a money order for too much. He deposited the money order and then wired them back the difference. Now the money orders bounced. So he is fucked. What should he do? I know he should go to the police, but should he contact Craig's list? Is their anyway for him to get the money back? Just wanted to get other people's opinions.
Thanks
Also Anyone want a to buy a 3 piece drum set..with cases..let me know.

Yes, I've been tring to sell a concession trailer goe almost a year now, I'm so greatful they have the warnings. Still these bastards are incredibly bold(as my bank is in the loop) I give them the name of the bank attn: whomever,,,, I make clear to them that I will not accept direct delivery and there will be a waiting period... blah blah. And they will continue to run the con,
I've had no fewer than 14 attempts this year,

I hate when I get scammed on Craiglist. Like that time the "17 year old" whore I hired turned out to be at least 20. What a fucking ripoff.

He feels like shit...pissed and feels stupid or falling for this. Worst part, he is not working and now he is even more fucked. Should have him read this thread..this way he would get the whole gun in his mouth.
Of course I don't think anyone deserves this, especially family. He went and filed a police report and he was going to contact Craig's list. Just wondering how the bank can let the money orders go thought, I mean don't they have a way of checking them.

Even if he did get a bad money order from a scam why wouldn't he at least wait for it to clear at the bank and be sitting in his account before wiring back the difference?

A lot of people think that a money order is as good as cash. That's the whole basis of the scam.

Yeah - I'm guilty of this. I've always regarded money orders in this way. I understand that there are people producing fake money orders, but I thought the whole idea of a money order was you buy it for the amount necessary. How is that not as good as cash?

Fake money orders are the problem. It's easier to fake a money order (or a cashier's check) than make counterfeit money.

But as a general rule a MO is as good as cash - unless, of course, it's a fake.

by that do you mean put it in his dark end?
Personally I think the bank should be more alert for counterfeit checks, MO or cash. Especially since he went on to wire money to someone the same time he deposited this, it should have been a red flag for a bank teller and they should have commented or at least double checked. Not every bank takes your money business personal though.

Not contacting Craig's List to do something but maybe they have info that can be used against this person. Also to let them know so they could cut this scumbag off from Craig's List. I think he should contact them. so no one else get screwed.
As for the MO I really thought it was sort of like cash, or sort of like checked by the bank...but what the fuck do i know...it's a family trait.

Okay, I have to get something cleared up, so a money order isn't like cash? I thought the purpose was that you bought it for cash so it was like a pre-paid something or another.
When you deposit them into your bank do they put a hold on them to check them? I guess they would because people scam them. Hmm. Wouldn't the bank normally show you that on your statement though?

Your bank still has to get the cash from whoever issued the money order. Not sure if they credit your account right away or not. Regardless, if you take a money order for payment for something, don't assume it's a done deal as soon as you deposit it. Wait for your bank to clear it first. They should be able to tell you how long it will take.
But, the problem isn't legit money orders. It's bogus money orders. Real money orders are backed by cash, and payment is guaranteed.

You can limit yourself to Postal Money Orders, which requires you to lay out cash rather than a bank one, which would be pulled from the account.
