View Full Version : When do you turn on the heat?

TheMojoPin

I had a couple friends over last night and they were bitching that my apartment was too damn cold. It's in the mid-40's outside so it was like 62 in my place. I'm not saying that that's warm, but fucked if I'm paying for the heat to be on if it's still in the 60's in my apartment. I don't turn it on until it dips below 55, until then just bust out the blankets.

At what temperature does your place have to be when you turn the heat on?

Low 60s but that's only cuz my husband makes me. I'd use sweats and blankets if I could and wait until it got in the 50s. The only time it bothers me is when I take a shower. I usually turn the heat on when I wake up so I'm warm when I get out of the shower.

I try to go for a date rather than a number. Last year we turned the heat on Thanksgiving weekend. I'm trying to aim for Dec. 1 this year. It never goes on before Thanksgiving though. And when it is on it gets set to 55 during waking hours and gets shut off at bedtime. Thermals and wool socks FTW.

Even when it goes one there's no way it's going above 70. 65-70 at the most.

RhinoinMN

68 or 67.

If it gets too cold outside (it always does) I light up the fireplace and woodstove to supplement.

Yeah, siphoning the runoff heat from the condo below me was always a way I could keep my costs down, but my neighbors are moving in the next month or so so I'm gonna be losing out on that.

I use heating oil, its more cost efficient to set it low(63 for me) and let it heat steadily rather than let the temp drop into the 50's like a miser and then fire it up. My fireplace helps too

luckily we don't pay for heat, but we haven't started using it all yet.

it's been in the low 40's all week and comfortable inside.

in the winter we actually never even turn the heat on in the bedroom & sleep with the windows open. we just turn the heat on in the livingroom & second bedroom to help warm the apartment.
