My Verizon contract is up at the end of this month so I get my "New Every 2" Deal with them where I can purchase a new phone from them at that initial low price with a resigning. So now that I've enjoyed the Samsung Alias (it had some wack model number when I bought it) I've been considering going with a higher grade phone now.
I have narrowed it down to 2 contenders, but I'd greatly appreciate ANY feedback about other Blackberry models or even other companies' phones. But just to let you know I'm not going with any other carrier, Verizon is the ONLY carrier that gets a lot of service up new my friend's house in Pennsylvania and I need that. So no iPhone for me because I've seen the service my friend got up there. He didn't have a signal for the entire time we were in PA, so fuck that.
My choices right now are between the Storm 9530 and the Tour 9630. For some reason the Storm is cheaper than the Tour and I'd like to know why, I don't seen an obvious reason in the reviews I've been reading.
I also don't see Wi-Fi on either of them. One thing I really like about my buddy's iPhone is he can use a Wi-Fi signal to get on the net which is sweet. From what I've read neither the Tour nor the Storm has the ability to do that. That kinda sucks balls. That could really come in handy on the road. A lot of your larger truck stops and other rest stops have Wi-Fi available and I could see myself using it to get directions or send E-mails on while going to shows with my band. Do any Verizon users have a phone that can do that? I'd really like that.
So that's about it. Thanks.

My old Curve had wi-fi, but my storm does not.
And the Storm is probably cheaper because the new models are coming out soon (or already came out, I'm not sure).
I love my blackberry half the time, hate it the other half. I have to take the battery out to reset it at least three times a week (I had to do this with my curve, too), the radio will just shut off at random times, too.

Yea, as I was just doing more Google searches for the Blackberry Storm it auto suggested "2" suddenly, so I found out that the Storm 2 with rumored Wi-Fi is also rumored due out at the end of October. So you are right, they're trying to move their old stock of Storms to bring in the new ones. My actual 2 year date is the 27th so it may end up working out for me. I hate getting the initial release of anything but I'll consider living with the hassle of updates and bugs if it has working Wi-Fi.

Well, when you get home and read this you will see I'm not even considering switching from Verizon, sorry. I love gadgets and the iPhone looks nice but I just can't roll with the service. AT&T just don't cut it.

There have been rumors of an iphone on verizon forever.
D'Oh.
With plenty of heat on AT&T this past year, hopes have been running high for Apple to share its iPhone with Verizon. However, an analyst does not foresee a Verizon iPhone arriving anytime soon.
That’s because Verizon recently announced a partnership with Google to offer two new Google Android-powered handsets this year. That would suggest Verizon’s near-term direction is with Android, said Scott Ellison, an IDC analyst, in a ComputerWorld article.
Ellison added that there’s no sign Apple is ready to share its iPhone with another carrier. Also, three IDC analysts said Verizon probably won’t receive the iPhone until it converts to its fourth-generation Long Term Evolution (LTE) network.
Several months ago, some analysts speculated the iPhone would be shared with the Verizon network by 2010. Many sources have claimed AT&T’s exclusive contract with Apple ends next year, though this remains unconfirmed. Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg told The Wall Street Journal that Apple is more likely to bring the iPhone to Verizon once the telecom company deploys its LTE network. He explained the majority of the wireless industry plans to transition to LTE in the next few years, and it would then make sense for Apple to bring Verizon on board. Verizon has said it is rolling out LTE next year.
Of course, cellular networks take several years to deploy and optimize, so we didn’t believe Verizon would get the iPhone as soon as it began rolling out LTE. Thus, IDC’s reasoning is plausible. Meanwhile, iPhone owners disgruntled with AT&T, or Verizon customers eagerly awaiting the iPhone to land on their network, can keep wishing for the day Apple ends its exclusive relationship with AT&T.

the Tour is as I understand it just n updated Bold for Verizon - really nice phone but not strong with multimedia - which Berries generally aren't, per say. It does not have Wifi.
The any-day-now-to-be-released Storm 2 is what the Sotrm 1 should have been (based on what most blogs/Engadget have posted thus far). It's essentially RIM's answer to the iphone and while it might not be a "killer", it's shaping up to be a fine mobile for people on Verizon not wanting to move to Shit-T&T just to have a trendy phone. It will have Wifi, full touch screen and embedded 2GB memory with a preloaded 16GB memory card. My NE2 is up in January but I'm hoping with a face to face visit in-store they'll let me upgrade to one of these and apply my credits (they did that last time with my current 8330 Curve).
I think you have a month to return the phone if you dont like it, so worse case you get it, it sucks, you return it and go back on your current phone - but I think RIM has a solid performer with the Storm 2. If you prefer something less fancy they'll be rolling out a Curve 2 as well but I havent read up much about them since I've pretty much focused on the Storm 2.
I love my 2 year old curve but you can't load too much stuff on it, otherwise the resources choke.

Here's a link to a blog from a fairly-well known guy in the Berry community - he posts a lot of leaked videos and some of his own where he tests and compares models. Many of his clips get pulled from Youtube but he's been providing downloads of the videos now.

Oh I'm sure the Pay internet is great. I'm probably not going to use that much and don't plan to get the full service, that's kinda pricey. I was really going to use it as a phone and use Wi-Fi points for internet at need. Kinda ghetto but kinda affordable.

I saw their Blackberry plans and a decent one isn't much more than I'm paying now for just voice with the 5 Friends and Family. So although price is a concern it's not a deal breaker right now.

if there is a wifi signal that i can access, my phone switches over (i have to set it up the first time manually) and runs all interwebz AND phone calls over the wifi, which if im correct, does not eat into your minutes. then again, my bb is through t-mobile, which blows goats here in the states.

That is another phone I saw and considered. I really want to actually touch that one in the store too. I plan to go into the Verizon store I got my original contact at and see what they can do for me before I do anything. Then I'll go back on the website and look for their deals, then make a decision.
The Storm 2 is high on my list though. Wifi is a possible deal breaker though. If I can get a phone with a full web browser and Wifi in it I won't have to take my netbook with me on the road as much.

I don't have too much to add, but I have the storm. I have my email linked to it, and pay for the internet service (which I noticed you didn't really want to do) and it really comes in handy when I'm not able to get to a computer. I was in the hospital with a super-dee-duper broken wrist and was able to keep evryone updated through email and facebook using my blackberry. I liked that because I didn't feel like talking to a bunch of people. That being said, I'd wait for the new version. I also get great service with Verizon.

So you have the Storm and seems you generally like it. Do you find the on screen keyboard annoying? I've heard that the fact that you have to "click" each key instead of just quickly tapping the screen gets annoying. Is that true? Any other little things about it you don't like? Just curious, I'm sure they're going to fix a few bugs on their new one and cause a few too but the WiFi thing is really something I want to get. I'm not opposed to the wireless internet, I'll ask the Verizon store about a few different plans but right now I'm probably gonna go budget and think about turning up my access when I get employed again.

This threads scary.
Yes you have to have the data plan, and with an edge connection you'll find internet browsing plenty fast, and sending receiving emails as well.
The new curves should be at vzw soon, think tour with less mp camera, lower resolution screen, and a trackpad instead of ball.
The new storm is going to have 4 contact points on the screen instead of the one it presently has.
The os is basically the same, so the decision between the tour and storm 2 will be your typing preferences.
If you're looking for more of a media device you might want to look at the android phones, motorolla has a couple due out soon.
I'm a bb user but I'm going to take a good long look at the pre and the new android phones, those are really the only other competition (to me)

Moe, go with the Tour. Its a lot easier to type on and has most of the same features. I have the Bold and I wish it was a bit smaller. If this was around when I was shopping them, I would have picked it over the Bold. This has a better camera than mine too. You will like it.
Weird, because I remember maybe 2 years ago when you didnt even have a cell phone, now look at you! Shopping for the best there is! :)
Know what I did? I also got a iPod Touch and hooked it up with my wireless router and its an awesome 1-2 combo.

I like it, although the typing took a bit of getting used to. Now, I don't even think about it. It annoys alot of people though, so I'm sure that's one of the things they'll work on. I'm not tech savvy at all, so I had to go in periodically and ask questions about dumb stuff. I haven't had any trouble with it, other than having no idea how to work it when I first got it. It's pretty user-friendly. Hotmail requires you to enter your info every 30 days to keep receiving emails on your phone, but I had no idea. I took it in to Verizon, and they had no idea either and took about an hour to figure it out. Can't blame them though, that was a hotmail issue. I'm really not much help am I?

What's cool about having the iPod touch along with the Blackberry is you can get a feel for what its like to have a touch screen without the expensive commitment, plus be able to play game and have your music and an alternate organizer and browser. As a browser, the ipod blows the Blackberry out of the water, as long as you are in a wifi area. If I had to rely on my Blackberry for the web I would hang myself. Its okay, but they are slow. But typing on it is much better and its tough and user friendly and stable.

The thread scares me for the amount of mis-info.
All the info I gave you is about vzw phones...either present or coming.
And by the storm2 have 4 points of contact I mean that right now the storm has one which is right in the middle of the phone..
The new one will have four, which will make typing on it a lot easier. Think of it right now as if every key on your keyboard didn't have its own click point but shared one in the middle.

I understand your point bro, but I just spent money earlier this year on a 120gig iPod Classic so I'm really not in the market for another iPod for at least the 2 years of warranty I now have. The iPod Touches look very nice but none of them yet had the amout of storate I was looking for either. I'm sure they will fix that eventually.

I understand what you mean. The 4 points will make the touch screen far more responsive and sensitive. That's what I'm looking for, improvements over the Storm 1. I'm going to the Verizon store today and looking around, asking some questions and just feeling phones.

I'll second his comments on the browser, if you're using the phone on the road a lot iand want a good mobile browser the bb's just doesn't compare to mobile safari.
Using opera mini helps a lot though its still not close.
That's the main reason I'm considering a different platform, unless the new opera is a lot better I just need a better mobile browser. And carrying both an ipod and a phone just doesn't make much sense to me.
Either way mo just wait it out, at least for the storm 2. But I'm gonna have to wait for the hero/motorolla android devices till I make my choice...which is hard cause I qualify for a full discount every 10 months...and I'm at 12 months.

I had the Verizon Tour for about 3 weeks. I got rid of it yesterday because there's a flaw with the rollerball. It doesn't scroll left and right. It's a defect with the Tour, as my post-purchase research found. There's supposed to be a firmware fix for it at the end of the month, but we'll see what happens.
I am holding out for the Storm 2, which should also be coming out at the end of the month.

You can tether bb's at verizon as long as you pay for it, more miss-info in the thread.
True, the Tour I had offered tethering for an additional $10 a month.

I'm not mr verizon, just a literate consumer who really hates the amount of bad info that's given to people like moe on websites.
And the initial tours had some quality issues (one being dirt behind the screen) and the tracknall issues....which suck cause the tb isn't user servicable anymore.
And I'm used to your bad info in the apple threads dude, so don't cop the attitude with me.

Well I went to the Verizon store, and I have to say I am not "wowed" by the Blackberry devices. The trackballs on these things aren't as responsive as I was hoping. The buttons on the Tour are fucking small. I can feel the single click point in the middle of the screen that instrument was talking about, the typing wasn't hard at all and I know I'll get used to it.
I was a little pissed. The guy who was assigned to me wasn't rude at all, I just got this feeling that once he realized I wasn't actually due for my "New every 2" until the 27th of this month and that I was very interested in waiting for the Storm 2, he kinda washed his hands of me. I got "Well there's all our Blackberry phones over there, let me know if you need anything." OK. Thanks douche. I'm gonna stick with Verizon but I don't have to give that store my business again.
So that's about it. The only Blackberry that kinda wowed me was the Pearl Flip, and just because you get a lot of the Blackberry shit in such a small phone, but I understand that means limited performance and storage I'm sure.
After my visit if I HAD to get one today I'd probably go with the Tour but I think I'm gonna hold out for the Storm 2.

I am a AT&T guy, and the reason I left Verizon was because of what you said Moe. I hate being assigned a person and having to wait on them, and then once you are lucky enough to get them to yourself, if they sense you arent buying, they toss you to the wind. Fuck Verizon. Their phones have most of the phones features suppressed and the service sucks worse than anything I have experienced. Not saying that AT&T doesnt have its issues, but you dont have nearly the bullshit with Verizon. My initial cells were all with Verizon and I swore by them too, but towards the end, they forced me out with their games and lack of caring for people. In the Hicksville store, if you want to get a phone, you better take a fucking day off work! You will be there for hours and hours.

I'm a Pearl guy all the way. I gave up the wifi capability in order to to have a phone that will fit easily in my pocket. Curve and Storm are way too big.
The wifi isn't a big issue because the Now Network provides everything I need. I have 3 phones (2 are bb's) all on unlimited everything for $129. One phone for unlimited everything is $99, so 3 give you more bang for the buck.
Perhaps you could get your family to join in, and get similar savings with your current carrier.
Just my thoughts.

Well to be fair as I said, the guy wasn't outwardly rude to me, but I could tell he was pretty much done with me when he realized there was no way he was selling me a phone.
I've had my problems with Verizon in the past, but AT&T's coverage sucks a bag of soggy dicks. My buddy Grim had Cingular, then they merged with AT&T and he's never been more pissed off at a phone company. If Verizon had the iPhone he's switch the day it came out. He went from full bars to his phone going over to voice mail in his own house in the more populated areas of NJ down off route 3. He also got ZERO bars in Pike County, PA where I spend every Saturday, so that's another reason I won't be going to AT&T.
I am stuck with Verizon's coverage, but I can't complain about it. I get a signal all over the place and I've owned different phones while going out there.
So now that I've been investigating phones I do see what people are talking about with Verizon limiting options on their phones and I know their customer service has major issues. But they have the best coverage around and for that, I'm sticking with them. Because it doesn't matter how many things my cell can do if I can't get a signal.

Did the rep even suggest that the Storm 2 was due out any day? If not then fuck him, he lost a sale because he wanted to move old inventory.
I also thought the issue with the Tour/trackball was fixed - if not then I'd avoid it. In fact I think that will be the last model with a trackball so if you can hold out for one with a pad, do so. The ball is a bitch to clean every week anyway.
All the clips and reviews in the end are a small part of the decision - I'd wait for the stores to have a working unit on the floor so you can mess with it - that's what I'm doing at least. Like I said, worst case you end up hating whatever phone you choose and you can return it to fall back on your current model. I love my curve but it's just not powerful enough anymore.

The guy didn't suggest anything. After he looked in the comp and found my New Every 2 date wasn't until the end of the month AND after I asked him about 2 phones he didn't even have, he was done with me. I am considering using another store after that to be honest, I don't care if they're close. None of the Verizon stores around me are very far.
If there weren't any new Blackberrys due out soon I'd probably go with the Tour, but since it now seems the Storm 2 is closer than ever, I'm more than happy to wait until the 27th. Right around that time, things should be movin' and shakin' in the Verizon phone community.

And don't hold your breath on a vzw iphone, especially afters verizons very visible partnership with google.
I'm either going to hold out until the pre and the motorolla droid are released to compare against the storm 2, or I'm just gonna get a tour in the meanwhile.
And am I the only one annoyed that a blackberry can't continue to play music with the camera open?

Meanwhile, iPhone owners disgruntled with AT&T, or Verizon customers eagerly awaiting the iPhone to land on their network, can keep wishing for the day Apple ends its exclusive relationship with AT&T..

Storm 2 (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2354221,00.asp?kc=PCRSS02129TX1K0000530)
The BlackBerry Storm2 9550 finally delivers on the original Storm 9530's promise. It's a powerful device with an innovative click screen that really works—and it feels finished instead of like an engineering prototype. Having said that, the Storm 9550 is now a proper version of last year's groundbreaking smartphone. Is that good enough for an Editors' Choice award, given all that's happened in the wireless industry in the past year? It's a tough call, but we have to say no because of its unimpressive Web browsing and underpowered camera.
