Can anyone tell me why there were only 25 first round draft picks in 1990 when there were 28 teams?

I am guessing because 3 teams drafted in the first round of the 1989 supplementary draft and therefore forfeited their first round picks in the 1990 NFL draft.

come on, there were some QAULITY picks in the 90 draft:
2 New York Jets Blair Thomas Running Back Penn State
dont worry about the fact that rodney hampton, or some guy named Emmit Smith went later in the first round. This pick was ON POINT

Why didn't Blair Thomas pan out for the Jets?

McCants was a monster at Bama. Looked like a good pick at the time.
He hasn't adjusted well in his post-NFL life though...
On March 28, 2008, Prichard, Alabama police arrested McCants on charges of possession of drug paraphernalia, resisting arrest, and loitering. The police were forced to subdue McCants with a Taser gun after he threw a pair of pliers, a screwdriver, and a crack pipe at an officer, nearly hitting him in the head.

My favorite moment of this video is when Roselle says "Fullback...", and you hear someone very audibly yell "OH NO!"

God, that montage never gets old. Whenever I think the Bears' drafting can't get any worse that brings me back to reality.

Freeman McNeil and Ken O'brien were okay as Jets.
Wasn't Blair Thomas any good at Penn State?

every team has a few busts. We have Larry Johnson, he holds a few NFL records.
Kurt Warner was damn good for Seattle.
Franco Harris is a Hall of Famer.
Lenny Moore had touchdowns in 18 straight games, a record he shares with LaDanian Tomlinson.
And for fun, look up Michigan Running backs drafted in the first round. Tsmunga Biakabatuka had a servicable career, the rest were pure dreck. Anthony Thomas. Chris Perry. Tyrone Wheatley...

EVERY running back in the NFL from rutgers is a solid player. So what if there is only 2. SOLID
My favorite lock of a RB that busted hard was Rashaan Salaam. Nice work bears. Also FUCK YOU RON DAYNE

Curt Warner. I am deducting myself some fan points for that fuckup.
Also check out the Penn Staters drafted in the 7th and 8th round of that draft--O lineman Dave Szott played for 14 years and Roger Duffy played 12 years. Both played for the Jets at some point, Duffy was drafted by them. Think decent lineman had anything to do with Blair Thomas' success in college?
Look at Ki-Jana too. He had Jeff Hartings and Marco Rivera blocking, both pro-bowlers and super bowl champions. Plus Kerry Collins was the QB and Bobby Engram was the main WR. Both are still in the NFL 15 years later.
The Jets drafted another Penn State running back three short years later--Richie Anderson. He never was the starter at Tailback, but wound up as a pass receiving fullback and made the pro bowl as a Jet in 2000....

there is some revisionist history with the Jet's 1995 pick of Kyle Brady--they were going to take JJ Stokes if they didn't Draft Kyle Brady.
Stokes has one less career catch than Brady, who turned into primailry a blocking TE, and would have been every more of a "Jets" first rounder...

nope, but he was a considered a reach even at 12, due to his history of positive weed tests.
this article from 1995:
When the 49ers beat up on the NFC this year, polish off their fourth straight divisional title in November and strut through the playoffs again, somebody please remember to send flowers to Rich Kotite and the New York Jets.
Thanks to them, the 49ers’ explosive offense just got another stick of dynamite in J.J. Stokes, a UCLA wide receiver the 49ers coveted so highly they traded in half of this year’s draft and the best part of next year’s.
In one of Saturday’s boldest moves, the 49ers were able to take Stokes with the 10th pick, acquired from Cleveland for the 49ers’ first pick (the 30th overall), their third (94), one of their two fourths (119) and next year’s No. 1.
”We had to pay a price,” Coach George Seifert said, “but it’s something we feel will pay dividends down the road. . . . This is the fella we wanted to get, and everything just fell into place.”
The Jets made it all possible by taking Penn State tight end Kyle Brady - not Stokes - with the ninth pick, incurring the wrath of hostile New York fans, ruining the day for the Browns and, ultimately, casting doubts about the future of 49ers receiver John Taylor.
After peddling Pro Bowl receiver Rob Moore to Arizona, the Jets appeared ripe for Stokes. So sure were the 49ers that Stokes would go to New York that they hurried to make a last-minute deal when it was the Jets’ turn to pick.
They were too late. Told New York’s choice had been phoned in, 49ers player-personnel director Vinny Cerrato moved to the team’s draft board and started to erase Stokes’ name.
”Not so fast,” 49ers executive John McVay told him.
The Jets had just told McVay on the phone that they’d taken Brady. Within minutes, the 49ers had a deal with Cleveland, which was willing to bail out after missing on defensive end Mike Mamula - Philadelphia got him with the seventh pick - and Brady.
”It was just too good to be true from our perspective,” team President Carmen Policy said. “There’s no question (the Browns) were zeroing in on the tight end, and I think they were very disappointed - and probably surprised, like we were - that the Jets picked the tight end, as opposed to the wide receiver.”
Stokes was so, well, stoked when he heard what happened he ran out of his San Diego home and jogged around the block.

In Ki-Jana Carter's defence, the very first carry he ever had in the NFL, his knee exploded.
Its more amazing that NO ONE in that class has been elected to the HOF. That will change with Emmitt Smith (and eventually Junior Seau and Shannon Sharpe), but still...wow.
