This doc has been playing on either IFC or Sundance lately. The film itself is a decent, albeit formulaic documentary, but the subject matter is fascinating. The Monks were an avant-garde garage band from the 60's. I had heard many contemporary artists mention them as an influence, but never really looked into the band. Hearing much of their music in this doc makes you realize how far ahead of their time they were. You can hear the beginnings of Punk, Hard rock, Experimental, Avant-garde, and Electronic music in their material.
Edit: eMusic subscribers can get their '66 album Black Monk Time as well as a 2009 release of their early material. (http://www.emusic.com/artist/The-Monks-MP3-Download/11987524.html)

I really wish I had seen this - any announced replay times? I went through my guide for a couple of days but didn't see it listed.

It doesn't show up in my Comcast search for the next few days. I'm sure it will be back. It's available on Netflix (not instantly).

Nice! I'll add it to my way-too-lengthy list.

Damn, I want to see this.
I heard the Monks for the first time earlier this year and it blew my mind that they came from the era they did. They sound so far ahead of their time, plus they were just a bunch of US army guys hanging around Germany.

It's really an amazing story. It's almost unbelievable that these sort of straight-laced army guys could come together and create something so rebellious and dangerous for the time.

Definitely up there with the Sonics in terms of being these weird, fucked-up proto-punk groups in the middle of the 60's.

I swear you can see the beginnings of slam dancing in those audiences. They want to do it, but it just hasn't been discovered yet.

I just ordered this, a memoir written by the bass player, who is now an auhor. (http://www.amazon.com/Black-Monk-Time-Coming-Anti-Beatle/dp/0963337122/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1254707992&sr=1-1)

Great band but I'm pretty sure you're all pretending to like them to seem cool.
But seriously, I saw parts of this this weekend, and hopefully will get to watch the whole thing.
