You might like Pavement. Try their album "Westing (By Musket and Sextant)". It's their best work.

that's really surprising. I love Big Star and have always thought they were pretty accessible. I completely understand someone calling a band like Throbbing Gristle or Sun Ra unlistenable - to each his own. Big Star to me, however, just seems like well-written, really good pop/rock

There is something inherent in power pop that drives casual listeners away. Personally, I get Big Star but as for the rest of power pop ... I feel gay listening to it. There was a power pop thread, I think, and I went to hoping to find something new to me - I left that thread and swore off power pop.

Why the fuck would someone waste time and money or music they don't actually like just because it's "cool?" How is it cool? Couldn't you just lie and say you have it already or like it? Who the fuck is going to check?

yojimbo7248

Maybe I am naive but I think most people listen to music they like.

many people project their own taste too much. they can't imagine liking certain music and conclude that people are pretending to like it to look cool. I think this is extremely rare.

Especially with a group like Big Star who so directly influenced so many other bands. It seems like most people here who like them found them the same way: listened to power pop bands that said they were or written up as being influenced by Big Star and so those of us that were into the power pop worked our way back. It's such a direct line from the sound of Big Star to bands like Teenage Fanclub and the Replacements that saying that Big Star is "unlistenable" is basically saying most of the bands influenced by them are unlistenable.

amen, brother. you also described perfectly how I discovered them. Maybe people interpret finding a band this way as trying to find what is "cool" and then immediately liking them because they should. Maybe that's the case with some people but not many, in my experience.

People who get so pissed off at the Williamsburg hipsters need to a take a closer look at why they are so angry. Sure there are some fake, shallow people there but many of them are into very interesting music.

People typically like what they like musically without having to "force it." Personal tastes and preferences change over time, but people are usually into the music they say they like at any given point in time.

If and IF this argument maybe sorta wanted to work, he should've claimed that "Third/Sister Lovers" was the problem. But claiming that #1 Record is bad is especially hideous when it comes packaged in current form WITH Radio City.

Lets face it, Dude! has no taste.

Momentary Laspe if Reason, Wish You Were Here, The Wall and even The Division Bell are pretty darn tight.

The Bends is simply an amazing cd, ok computer isn't that far off either.

Weezer has some fun music, but they're not anything special...yet not terrible either.

All bands are good, and all bands suck to someone (except Coldplay. They just suck. But I just hate them, because I think that makes me cool). I think, in most cases, people who think other people like a band because it makes them cool, are actually just insecure about something.

This thread confuses me. I don't know anyone who has music they don't actually like at least one song on the CD from. I also don't know anyone who would think a person was cooler because that person said they like a certain band.

I won't go into my own personal tastes but I usually go the other way. I don't like bands that everyone else seems to enjoy.

I'm not taking anything personally. I just think it's a stupid idea to think that people spend money and time listening on music they don't even like just to seem "cool." I don't care if you don't like Ryan Adams; if that's not your thing, hey, life goes on.

Were we talking about current groups ?

Clearly when Rage Against The Machine was MTV big there were a lot of people that loved them because of that social awareness and anti-gov't nonsense.

As far as Jones goes I think people liked her because it was trendy and without a doubt her music sucked. There was nothing at all musical about it. It was essentially her talking over music. Dreadful.

I'm not a fan of the girl by a long shot, but 'nothing musical about it' are words spoken for the sake of speaking. People liked her because she had a pleasant voice, good instrumentation, and delivered warm pop sentiment. C'mon!

Yeah, I can't agree with this at all. I'm not a fan, but she was never "trendy". She sold primarily to housewives, and she's arguably a bit better than the MOR that crowd usually buys.
