View Full Version : ESPN 30 for 30

ESPN is starting a new series of 30 different documentaries for its 30th anniversary, each done by a different acclaimed director (like Barry Levinson on the Colts leaving Baltimore and John Singleton on Marion Jones and Spike Jonze on Mat Hoffman)
It starts next Tuesday (October 6) with Peter Berg on the Wayne Gretzky Trade ("King's Ransom" (http://30for30.espn.com/film/kings-ransom.html))
Most of what ESPN does nowadays is pretty much dreck, but this looks like a really awesome, interesting series, especially considering how diverse the stories are (everything from horse racing to fantasy football to Len Bias)

They probably will at this point. Frankly, it would be better for the program if they completely crapped out this season, eased Coach Friedgen out the door, and let Coach Franklin take over. Since the team is so young, they could build it up as the renovations to the Byrd are being completed.

Starts tomorrow night. I'm excited for this. It's a great concept and I've read Simmons talking about it for long enough.

I'll be watching the Caps game, but i'm sure I'll catch it on the one billion different replays they will have for it.

I thought the Gretzky one was good, but not the unique vision I had hoped for. Just seemed like an extended E:60 segment.
But the last two, especially tonight's on the USFL, were knocked out of the park. This series might end up being the best thing ESPN has ever done.

Yeah, like everyone else I'd assumed the USFL was a complete joke of a league, a loser from the start, but it really does appear that it might have worked out if Donald Trump hadn't been such a douche.

They should have stuck with the original plan. You cannot blame it all on Trump, the other owners did not have to do what Trump wanted.

Tonight's USFL special was phenomenal. How the hell did Trump go from full head of hair to the rat's nest he wears today? He had no in between actual bald stage.

The Holmes/Ali documentary may be one of the saddest pieces of television i've ever seen.
It truly was a fight that nobody won.
Tonight is "Without Bias" (http://30for30.espn.com/film/without-bias.html)about Len Bias' death.
I don't know if I can watch this. That was one of the most depressing days of my life.

Same here. Used to get bummed out every time I went by Washington Hall on campus
I work next door to the cemetery where Len's grave is. I think i'll go over there tomorrow during my lunch hour.

Bias died when I was 5 so I had no real idea who he was or about any of this. I can tell you though that even having read and known about his death, I never grasped the scope of it until this documentary. It wasn't just depressing either, something far beyond that. It could have been the most sad thing I have ever watched.

The Reggie Miller doc is on tonight. About the relationship with him and NY. Looks amazing, its supposed to be the best of the series. Can't wait to watch the replay.

that's what holds it back from being a truly great story. neither of those teams won it.
but that era, particularly those couple months in 94 are the peak of sports in the NY area. And Reggie was the main villain in that. the shit with Spike was tremendous. I really enjoyed it.
Can't wait for the Iverson one.

Tonight's documentary on Vlade Divac/Drazen Petrovic/Yugoslavian War was nothing short of stellar.

Best one I've seen. That is exactly what 30 for 30 was meant for.

It was decent, but at least light years better than the crap they had been peddling for the last few episodes! I hope they go out on top instead of getting stuck in a lull! Fuck you, Bill Simmons!

Or the O.J. one!
This one was better, but it had too much of the hand of the NBA guiding it, thought not as bad as the MLB-directed suck fest about the Red Sox beating the Yankees!
