i dont know if you can do this with the space bar, but when i spilled soda on my keyboard, i popped the keys off and cleaned each button underneath with alcohol and a cotton swab.

yes but you have to be careful when you take it off as there is usually a metal peice under it

I spilled a can of soda on my MacBook Pro key board a few months ago and it destroyed they computer. I sent it in for service and they said there was extensive damage to the casing, keyboard, optical drive and a few other things. They wanted $1,200 to fix it so I ended up buying a new MacBook. I now have Best Buy's accidental protection plan on my new laptop.

I still need to get around to testing the "keyboard in the dishwasher" idea. It's supposed to work.

I haven't done that, but I have taken one apart and throughly rinsed most of the parts in the sink. No problems, and no more errant food particles in the keyboard.
