View Full Version : Scenes you hate from movies you love

Title says it all. You love a movie, but there is a scene, an actor/actress you hate or so forth that you HATE from a movie you love. My first submission might garner a bevy of criticism, but I dont a give a fuck I hate the scene.
Pulp Fiction: the scene in the cab with Butch. I know the scene explains Butch killing the guy in the ring, and his reaction, and brings us to the watch. But I hate that whole scene. I know the cab driver drives me nuts. She is terrible in that scene. Yes she is sexy with her accent, but I hate that whole scene. I can watch Pulp Fiction with great joy and enjoy it even further fast forwarding through that whole scene. "Tell me Butch, what it is like to kill a man." Fuck you. I wish Butch killed her right then and there...that scene sucks. Yet it is a movie I love.

The rape in Straw Dogs is the first thing that comes to mind for me. Peckinpah shot the rape as if Amy was into it, or wanted it in some way - seriously, it plays like she enjoys the rape. Peckinpah is known for being a misogynist and this scene really drives that thinking home. I've never hated a scene more.
Full disclosure- I don't love Straw Dogs, I just enjoy as a Peckinpah film. Movies I Love are those with no scenes to hate.
the horse-riding-romance scene in Tombstone...I fast forward through that every time...

Is it too obvious to say everything after Private Pyle paints the wall in Full Metal Jacket?

One scene that sticks out is the scene in Sideways where Miles steals money from his grandma. It takes away any redeemable person in the movie for me. If that scene isnt there - I would have cared a lot more if he got the girl. I found myself rooting for the girl not to be interested in him.

Why would you not want to watch the best part of the movie?
Seriously, while the Gunnery Sgt. Hartman stuff is great, its nowhere near as great as the rest of the movie. Its like the first part is MASH the TV show and the second part is MASH the movie.

i totally disagree.
they're really two seperate movies and should be considered as such, but i would reverse your ranking

I didn't enjoy any scenes is Sideways. I was fully perplexed by the hype on that film.

Yeah, good pick. I'm a huge Peckinpah fan and I really like SD, but it's basically impossible to justify his vision for that rape scene.

I can't stand Sharon Stone, but I love her in that movie. If you end up hating her character in it then she's done her job.
PS - I think Casino is much better than Goodfellas. It's like the latter was the practice run for the former. The biggest plus is no Ray Liotta.

Sorry, without that scene you don't have this:
"I'm an American, honey, our names don't mean shit."
Plus structurally it's a great scene to have to let the audience catch their breath over the stress from the last sequence, and you need it to establish who Butch is and what kind of guy he is. If you skip all of that then Butch is basically nothing but a psycho prick (I mean, he is anyway, but the cab scene actually makes him a reasonable protagonist).

Both movies are brilliant, by practice run if you mean Scorcese honing his technique, I agree. In my opinion, it seemed like Stones character didn't have much emotional range, it was like one note..frantic, and it got tedious real quick for me.

I dunno, I thought she played it pretty well. When she shows up she seems like this fun, wild party girl. Everything else is just the flipside of that persona. I think it helps show that Ace doesn't know everything like he thinks he does. Her chaos is one of the things helping bring down the carefully constructed order of his life, just like Nicky is.
And yeah, I still love Goodfellas but it's got too many scenes where it seems like everything stops dead for Scorsese to blow the guys he idolized in the neighborhood where he grew up. Yeah, there's obviously a huge downfall, but how many scenes do we need where nothing happens and they're just rattling names off of nobodies or showing off horrible 70's furniture or cooking food or whatever? Casino is, I believe, a much longer film but it's much tighter in terms of almost everything you see actually mattering.

It is actually hard to justify most of what goes on in many Peckinpah films, did you see Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia? Just a super violent road movie.

SUPERBAD:
any scenes involving the "stupid" cops.
MILLION DOLLAR BABY:
when her over-the-top, cliched, white trash family visit her in the hospital. It plays like a comedy. I f'ing hate it.
JEDI:
When Darth wimps out, takes off his mask, and turns soft. I'd be happier if he simply sacrificed himself when he threw the emperor over the railing. His honor would've been redeemed AND the mystique of Vader would've been left intact.
RAY, ENEMY OF THE STATE, and JERRY MACQUIRE:
Any scene which features

I agree with Mojo on the cab scene, but as soon as I saw the thread title, I thought about the scene between Butch and his wife. Yes, I understand it sets up the whole "we're running away from the gangsters but I forgot my watch," but it takes the movie to a screeching halt for every time I watch it.

I don't lvoe Pulp Fiction but I like it a lot....and there are lots of scenes that are self-indulgent....that's what Tarentino does.

In Fight Club when Pitt gets his face smashed in by Lou the bar owner, who was a stereotypical mob guy that seemed like he belonged in a different movie altogether. Totally needless plot detour, although it does lead to a funny payoff of Pitt, bruised and bloodied, crossing his legs on a stool and immediately getting down to the business of giving his minions homework assignments.

i just thought of basketball diaries. the scene after the friend dies of leukemia. they all go out and play basketball while stripping in the rain.
i think it was supposed to show how dicaprio was losing his connection with life through depression and increased drug use.
but its the one time in the movie where they arent doing drugs.
it wouldve been the perfect scene in a movie where the star decides not to do drugs and instead joins the basketball team and focuses his energy toward the game.

In Grosse Point Blank, I just hate that scene when John Cusack and Jeremy Piven are in the car and Piven keeps screaming "10 years man! 10 friggin' years!" to which Cusack repeats a line he just said seconds earlier.
I don't know, for some reason that just annoys me.

Thank you Jon...like I opened this thread up with I understand why that scene is in there and showing Bruce Willis' humanity. But I just dont like that scene. I think it might be the actress, it might be that it is very slow, it might be all of that. I just dont like it and easily can skip through it when I watch the movie.

I'm talking about in a movie you enjoy watching or at least don't hate or haven't mentioned in the " Movies That Get Worse Every Time You watch Them ".
I got the idea as I'm watching the end of " Eraser ".
I watch it almost everytime it's on cable so I don't hate it but there are a few scenes that really bother me.
There's the scene where they are in the building trying to find out what's on the disc and then Arnold takes one of the guards and as he's using him as a shield pushes him in the elevator w/ other guards and pulls the pins on some grenades blowing them all up.
Why the hell do security guards in an office building have grenades attached to their gear ?

Animal House has one huge chink in the armor.
The scene when they're getting kicked out of the house and all of their stuff is being taken away.
And then Kroger looks over and sees it and gives the most painfully acted reply maybe in the history of movies, " Hey look !!! "
It's so bad it would ruin the movie if the movie didn't have so many other redeemable qualities.

I partially agree here. I think the Basterds with the dynamite strapped to their ankles intended on leaving but were locked in like all the Nazis. Remember, the Basterds plan and Shoshanna's plan were independent and unknown to each other.
I do agree that he should have exaggerated the Hitler murder scene. That was the climax of the entire movie, but if you blink, you would miss the no name Basterd shooting him like a dog. Shoshanna and Hammersmark got more glorified deaths than one of the biggest villains of all time.

The Mike Yamagata scene in Fargo. Yeah, I know the point is that later when Marge is told that what Mike told her isn't true, it leads her to re-evaluate what Jerry told her, but the scene just doesn't work, and it's really borderline racist.

Isn't it possible that Tarantino was just trying to put some of our modern culture into the past by having them be suicide bombers? I mean, for two jews who are part of the elite anti-nazi squad, going out with a bang taking out Hitler & Friends would be a pretty righteous death. Another possibility is that they are lost in the ecstasy of the kill and forget about the bombs on their legs. I don't seem to remember them knowing that the theater was locked.

It's my favorite movie of the last decade, but this one snippet; specifically :27 seconds to :31 seconds of this one little snippet...When the buck is shot-----all the animals looks so fake and computer generated. I remember seeing it in the theater and remarking on it. That glaring error makes me cringe almost every time I see it. How could the Brothers do this to me?

Inglourious Basterds....(sorry can't remember names) the scene when the young nazi goes back to the projection booth and the chick shoots him. The way he was laying and with his hand under him, just knew he was going to shoot her. That one scene just sucked and so predictable. Otherwise pretty good movie.

The scene in Shooter with the Attorney General.
It's such a dumb, contrived scene in a film with otherwise good action.
The whole idea that Danny Glover's character would be a dirty, black ops guy and have members of the Joint Chiefs vouching for him is ludicrous.
If there's anything we've learned from government conspiracy movies it's that " if you get caught, we don't know anything about you ".
Granted teaching the rookie FBI guy how to be a sniper and help eliminate 30 guys is a stretch too but it's not as lame as the AG scene because hey there are things exploding.
