I love shellfish but I was never a huge fan of fish passed salmon. I was told to try some steelhead trout if I like salmon. I have some in the fridge but I havent cooked it yet.
is there any other fish I might like based on liking just salmon?

No doubt, high heat, 2 minutes each side. no oil needed, the natural oils will come out, if you can find a asian grocery store they tend to have it for cheaper for about $10 lb., elsewhere usally $16 a lb. Natural buttery flavor there's nothing else like it.

If you like Salmon, you will at least like just about every other fish except for tuna and mackerel. The fat content in a fish is what gives it flavor, the oilier a fish, the stronger the flavor. Salmon is fairly high in fat, thus strong flavored. The American palate is a strange one, as you will hear people all the time say how they don't like any fish but tuna, which can be one of the strongest tasting fish. The biggest criminal in America's dislike for fish are those shitty grocery store meat/fish counters that almost always sell garbage farmed fish that has been handled poorly and left in open reach in coolers swaddled in cheap plastic wrap and styrofoam. If everyone would take the time to find a quality fish monger, the world would be a better place. Better yet, if everyone would go fishing once in a while, it would be an almost perfect place. If you've never sliced sashimi on the edge of a boat a minute after fighting the fish, you're missing one of the great pleasures in life.
Steelhead (Rainbow) trout are very similar to Salmon in taste. My favorite way to cook one is to pan fry it whole, maybe with a lemon slice, garlic, and/or basil leaf in the cavity. After frying both sides for a few minutes, you can cover it to steam a little, to get the desired doneness. Take appropriate action to prevent the skin from sticking, as once the skin goes, the filet tends to stick and flake away in the pan.
One gripe people have about Rainbows is the amount of pin bones that end up in your mouth. After a little practice and delicate handling, when the fish is cooked and on your plate, you can carefully lift away the skin on the top side, then gently remove large pieces of the filet, starting from the spine and working towards the belly, leaving all the pin bones behind. You'll still get a few bones. Flip it over and start workin on the other filet. Lemon juice to squeeze on the fish is good.

You fuckos are making me hungry ... and mentioning two of my very favorite, yet completely off-limits, fishes (tuna and swordfish) just made me very, very sad. *sigh*
BTW, nobody mentioned mahi mahi, which is a nice, firm-fleshed fish ... mostly sold on the East Coast frozen, but I've gotten it fresh from Whole Foods (yeah, so what?) and it's been better there than any other grocery.
ETA: About monkfish ... it was REALLY trendy a couple years ago, so it'll still be cheaper than lobster, but you might have some sticker shock.

Tilapia is a mild tasting white fish but it is deceiving. It is very high in fat and cholesterol. Most of it is farm raised in Thailand.I'm not saying don't eat it.Just don't over do it and think you are being healthy.
I personally find Chilean Sea Bass to be a little oily for my taste.
Swordfish,Ahi tuna, flounder, snapper, grouper(if you can get it up there) are all good healthy choices.

To me, Tilapia is disgusting. It is almost always farmed under very poor conditions, and it has a muddy (i.e. fish-shitty) flavor from being farmed in poorly filtered recycled water.
The kind of fat that you get from fish may be high in cholesterol, but the benefits of all the omega-3 fatty acid goodness are well documented.
One of the benchmarks I hold good sushi restaurants to is the quality of their Saba ("pickled" mackerel). I have won over a few "non-fish" people by sharing my Saba with them. It is very strong flavored, but in a good way if it is handled properly. Not to mention the silver/black striped skin is beautiful. It is not pickled like a dill pickle, it is a subtle pickle that brings out the wonderful "ocean" flavor. A tip for sushi joints: Ask if they have real wasabi. The best I've had was a small bowl a medium-dice wasabi in a light pickle. One of the best flavors ever. For those that don't know, the radioactive green paste touted as wasabi is usually colored horseradish.

As a rule it's best to be suspicious of any fish that is readily available in places like Denny's,Perkins,or truck stops. It is also a good rule of thumb to avoid cheap seafood imported from any asian country.Farm raised shrimp from the orient is often found in grocery stores. It is tasteless and rubbery compared to wild shrimp caught in the states.I think Gvac had a thread on shrimp a while back.

Almost any fish that is not caught locally is frozen. High end seafood joints will have fresh flown in daily, but chances are that any market fish that is not part of a local fishery has been frozen. When fish is caught it is cleaned and iced immediately, and shortly thereafter quick frozen at the plant. What this means when you go to the fish monger is that any non-local fish that they are selling that is not frozen was thawed. Buying a well-sealed piece of frozen fish, to me, is preferable to buying a thawed piece that has been sitting in the cold case for a while. Since it all comes from the same place, the frozen is in a better state.

Damn straight. Some panco crumbs or the store bought seasoned crumbs, a lil pinch of chilli, paprika, and cayanne powder and you have a kick ass fish meal for the cheap.

Trow a little corn meal in that breading.

I don't know if y'all can get it up there... but Amberjack is one of my fave Gulf fishes... and fun as hell to catch.
Grilled, fried... haven't found a bad way to cook it yet.

Abalone has a unique flavor, but not a bad one. Most people like it, when prepared right. The standard procedure is to beat the shit out of the meat to tenderize it, because it is very tough, then cut it into strips, bread and fry it. The best I've ever had wasn't tenderized or breaded; it was sliced paper-thin by hand and sauteed. Fantastic.
Judging by your fishy adventures, I think trying abalone is a must for you.
Barramundi? What's with the australian protein? I have had it, and found it unremarkable. It was similar to mahi mahi, which to me is pretty boring unless you hooked it yourself.

If you liked conch you will definitely like abalone. I forgot about conch. I had some conch ceviche on the beach here:
