I want to be able to access my music files between my two computers. One is XP, the other is Vista. I thought all I'd have to do is turn on networking, but that's obviously not the case. I ran the "network setup" utility on the XP device, but when I attempted to access that computer from the Vista machine I was asked for a username and password. Nowhere in the setup had I set up such a thing.
I went back and redid it, and this time created a network file that I was supposed to install on the other machine. This also didn't work. So I've come to my friends here to tell this illiterate idiot how to accomplish this.

ugh.
a lot of right clicking and a lot of permissions setting.
its pretty shitty huh?
In my vista pc i had to go directly the files as well and give them permission for the other PC
even though i turned everything to share.
i still cant get files from my lappy.
and im not sure how that will work as the XP and Vista folder structures are a bit different.

There's no easy way to do this without turning off alot of built-in, tight ass security measures. You can run a quick setup everytime you're ready to stream audio, or you can fiddle with certain permissions to allow access.
Everytime I want to share with my Xbox 360 I have to do a quick sharing setup where I have to re-allow it access everytime I turn it on. It's such a PITA.

Ok, then this isn't worth doing.
Thanks.

If you use iTunes you can just share your library and then the other computer can access it.

Yeah, I know, and I've used that quite a bit.
But I have other programs that can utilize my entire library (including the lossless files). I have two squeezeboxes, and on my itouch I have Simplify. Being able to access everything together would be very handy.

It shouldn't be too hard then.
Just go to each of the folders you choose to share, right click and then enable file sharing.

Thanks, but it doesn't really solve what I'm trying to do.

Part of it has to do with permissions but look at this: for a Vista explanation (http://blog.proud-geek.com/2007/04/02/windows-vista-annoyance-3-file-folder-sharing-between-computers-on-a-network/) and this is a big help. (http://www.informit.com/articles/article.aspx?p=1165037)
Let me know how that works, if you have problems I have some tips to follow.

Seriously, you might want to look into upgrading to Windows 7. It makes networking computers almost ridiculously simple.

Or downgrade the Vista computer to XP while Windows 7 works out its negatives. XP works pretty good for media sharing.
yeah, vista is such a pita.
i have several xp computers and 1 vista on my home network- i can't turn off that permission crap fast enough
