I rally miss the late great Tom Carvel and those incredible commercials.
"Fudgey The Whale", "Cookie Puss", and on St. Patrick's Day, "Cookie O' Puss".
Genius.

One might say that Tom Carvel had a nose for ice cream. <img src=http://www.amiannoyingornot.com/photo/1566.jpg>

Don't forget the classic "Brown Bonnet", a creation which was a Carvel staple, dipping the ice cream cone into chocolate. Tom Carvel was the "Thomas Edison" of ice cream.

...and before Perry Ferrell stole the name for his music festival, Tom Carvel was the originator of the "Lollapalooza".

The Carvel chain is hurting big time... they took a huge hit with the upcoming of the Rita's Ice type places.. i worked for one for 5 summers while in college. the carvel chain did not live up to many of the terms in the contract that they had with store owners.. stores are closing with the quickness... sucks but oh well... look in your local super market for carvel products soon to be the only place you will be able to find it...

The average American consumes close to 24 gallons of beer per year.

But explain this one.... if you are on a diet and order the no fat low sugar ice why are your toppings hot fudge, butterscotch, and marshmallow... that always confused me... if you are on a diet you should not be in an ice cream store...

It always bothered me that they obviously re-used the molds... CookiePuss was the same shape as the Snowman and the Easter Bunny, Fudgie the Whale was the same shape as Santa Claus, etc.

I was an odd child.

I heard a comedian once, I don't remeber who, that described Tom Carvels voice as being "like Tom Waits gargling hot asphalt."

Did anyone else have the
"fudgey the whale" shaped
communion cake? They could
make just about anything from
that shape.

Some random Carvel musings...

He was Greek, real name Tom Carvelis or something like that.

We always went there after we won some big little league game. Friendly's was for after school concerts and such.

When he died the company was sold and it became "Ice Cream Bakery." I liked the old school stores with the pink neon signs with the inverted "r" and the slanted roof.

I always had a Carvel Cake for my birthday, the "crunchies" inside were my favorite. Whenever I would by a cake for someone else, I always asked if there were crunchies inside, even though the person behind the counter would always roll their eyes and respond that every cake had crunchies.

Last year I bought a cake for my father's birthday and didn't ask and it was filled with peanut butter and fudge and no crunchies.

Finally, what the fuck is the slimy white stuff that coats the outside of the cake made of? It kind of tastes like melted Styrofoam.
