I'd like more of the Ted Danson character at this point.

I'm already partial to this because of the heavy use of Young Marble Giants in the soundtrack (see also Best One Album Bands thread).

Not a bad show, but it could be so much better.

How do I know that? Because if you read the pages of text in the intro, it presents a far more interesting version of the show. It's darker, with a more cynical sense of humor. I can't help but feel that they cast Schwartzman and then re-made the show around his style and personality.

I think it could have been better with a different lead. And it's nothing against Jason, it's just that I don't find this character very interesting or appealing.

I'm officially done with the show. I get the humor is supposed to come from Schwartzman being such a pussy played off of how hard boiled noir detectives are, but that doesn't make it any easier to watch him being a total pussy.

It's a character driven show, and I hate all of the characters. All of the characters seem to look up to Schwartzman but I have no idea why. And the primary conflict for the season seems like it's going to be if he gets back with his girl, or comes to peace with her leaving, and I really couldn't give a shit. God forbid this show have a plot, instead of a bunch of deadpan hipsterisms. And special guest Jim Jarmusch isn't going to help that one bit.

I'll check out tonight's episode, but I have this thing where everything I see Jason Schwartman in I find him as repellent, even when he isn't supposed to be. That might limit my enjoyment of this show.

If you have TIVO, or if you download the shows, like me, I suggest you pause at the intro and read the pages before they flip. It really is a more interesting version of the show than the final product.

In this "intro treatment", the character is a 42 year old alcoholic bored writer, who falls off the wagon and decides to place an ad on Craig's List to spice up his life. The hotel from the pilot episode, in the 'intro' version, the main character actually knows this hotel: "I knew the place because in the mid-90's I had a booze and coke relapse and hole up there myself for two days with a prostitute. For some reason, you never want to do such things in your own home."

The last page has this: "found out Vincent was dead, if they ever did find out, and so they probably would have just threatened her, said they's be watching her until Vincent showed up. She'd still have value to them as a link to their money and so she'd be alive, and maybe she would have been smart and gotten far away from New York. She could have been safe. But I had complicated everything and so because of me she was dead."

Isn't this version, the one with death, coke, prostitutes and depressed alcoholic writers superior to the ex-girlfriend-obsessed pussy detective show that it ended up being?

It is somewhat problematic if to make a show more interesting you have to pause it to read the credits.

Is that the story written by the real Jonathan Ames, or is it the story the fake Jonathan Ames will write at the end of the season?

I personally think that that is the original outline for the show, but after they cast Jason Schwartzman in it, they had to adjust the tone to fit his acting style.

I'm staying with it for a while.

Zach Gali-whatever is funny but very predictable. Isn't this the same characyer he played in " The Hangover " ?

Schwartzman is OK. I'm not totally put off by him yet.

I can do without Ted Danson though. His character is lame.

By the way did anybody catch the " Polanski " reference in Episode 3 ?

Timely.

It's basically half hour versions of an unfunny Wes Anderson movie. They are underutilizing Zack Galifianakis and Jason Schwartzman plays a very tame version of what he always plays.

Plus, people have differing opinions and no way will everyone think this show is hilarious, so you shouldn't be shocked that people's opinions are different, just as a life rule.

I'll keep watching though.

In the same line of thinking of the latter half of your post, I wholly disagree with your assessment. But, as you pointed out, art/entertainment is always subjective. I just thought this show would play well in this arena. Then again, how would I know?

I've been enjoying it and even Danson character is growing on me.

This last week's episode was the best so far.

The one weak spot is the ex-g/f and his " desire " to get back with er.

She's a useless character who brings nothing to the table other than to remind us that they used to date.

He should kooh up with the pothead from this last episode.

Finally got to see the season finale tonight. I have to say the show got better with each of the last 4 episodes. I'm now wanting to see more next week. I like the combo of the three of them teamed together and hope it continues into next season that way. Love the silliness of the animosity between Hodgeman and Jason, and Platt and Danson. Jenny Slate has plenty of oddly hot going for her also. I like her being matched up with Schwartzman.

I loved the last episode.

The last 2 episodes erased any issues I had with some of the previous ones ( probably because they didn't go back to to ex-g/f thing ).

Ted Danson, of whom I'm not really a fan, continues to make me laugh. He plays a great character.
