My dad's computer is 18 months old, and it's registered a "seek error" on the drive.

I'm taking a clean boot drive over to his house tomorrow to confirm it's a bad drive, and not a bad wire and/or motherboard.

Question I have is...

If the drive is bad, what's the easiest way of rescuing data?

Try this first.

maybe just the boot is bad, you can still connect and pull the data off of it. does it not work at all?

I've been using them since 1985. On;y one died on me. it was 7 years old and the fan gave out causing it to overheat. 1985-1992. that's a good run for any computer.
no problems since.

so in short, no.

let's compare the threads detailing mac problems versus threads detailing pc problems, shall we?

Yes, we definitely need another Mac vs PC thread.

Not to bright are you? Let's look at percentage of users first, then as I have detailed in many threads we can point out how a PC maker makes all the MACs and the internals are the same minus the BIOS programming. Then I can cite failure reports amongst manufacturers versus home built computers, and move on from there. Take your argument to an appropriate thread and I'll shut you down there, meanwhile let's offer this guy some real advice.

Matty, there could be a few things wrong with the drive such as a bad head, sector, etc. but you can still clone the drive. If you need to know how to clone a drive post or pm and I can help you further. Act fast though because something of this nature will usually escalate.

i'm not having an argument, he asked a question, i answered through my own experiences.
manufacturer reports? now who's not bright. i said lets look at the mac failure threads here vs pc failure threads.
read before you take us even further off topic

Don't know. I'll know more tomorrow once I take a boot drive over there and hook up a USB enclosure to the bad drive.

maybe if you weren't such an asshole your father's computer would be ok.

Problem solved.

Dad had gone into BIOS and screwed around with the boot order, so it was looking for a drive that wasn't there. He didn't tell me this. So after the initial "seek error" screen, the drive booted. The BIOS was re-set to the proper boot order.

and damnit, Marc, that made me laugh.

easy enough. I love when older people are bored and start to poke around, break something, and then "forget" to mention it to you. this has happened way more times then them having an actual problem.
